The Pie Is Shrinking So Much The 99% Are Beginning To Starve

This report was originally published by Charles Hugh Smith at PeakProsperity

Social movements arise to solve problems of inequality, injustice, exploitation and oppression. In other words, they are solutions to society-wide problems plaguing the many but not the few (i.e. the elites at the top of the wealth-power pyramid).

The basic assumption of social movements is that Utopia is within reach, if only the sources of the problems can be identified and remedied.  Since inequality, injustice, exploitation and oppression arise from the asymmetry of power between the few (the financial and political elites) and the many, the solution is a reduction of the asymmetry; that is a tectonic realignment of the social structure that shifts some power—economic and/or political—from the few to the many.

In some instances, the power asymmetry is between ethnic or gender classes, or economic classes (for example, labor and the owners of capital).

Social movements are characterized by profound conflict because the beneficiaries of the power asymmetry resist the demands for a fairer share of the power and privileges, while those who’ve held the short end of the stick have tired of the asymmetry and refuse to back down.

Two dynamics assist a social, political and economic resolution that transfers power from those with too much power to those with too little power: 1) the engines of the economy have shifted productive capacity definitively in favor of those demanding their fair share of power, and 2) the elites recognize that their resistance to power-sharing invites a less predictable and thus far more dangerous open conflict with forces that have much less to lose and much more to gain.

In other words, ceding 40% of their wealth-power still conserves 60%, while stubborn resistance might trigger a revolution that takes 100% of their wealth-power.

History provides numerous examples of these dynamics.  Once the primary sources of wealth-generation shifted from elite feudal landowners to merchants and industrialists, the wealth (and thus the political power) of the landed elites declined. As the industrialists hired vast numbers of laborers drawn from small farms and workshops, this mass industrialized labor became the source of the wealth generation; after decades of conflict, this labor class gained a significant share of the wealth and political power.

The civil rights and women’s liberation movements realigned the political and economic power of minorities and females more in line with their productive output, reducing the asymmetries of ethnic and gender privileges.

In broad-brush, progressive social movements seek to broaden opportunities and level the playing field by reducing the asymmetric privileges of dominant classes defined by power and privilege.  The core mechanism of this transition is the recognition and granting of universal human rights: the right to vote, the right to equal opportunity, and rights to economic security, i.e. entitlements that are extended universally to all citizens for education, healthcare, old-age pensions and income security.

Again in broad-brush, these movements have largely been categorized as politically Left, though many institutions deemed conservative (for example, various churches) have often provided bedrock support for progressive movements.

Social movements which seek to limit the excesses of state power tend to be categorized as conservative or politically Right, as they seek to realign the asymmetry of power held by the state in favor of the individual, family and the traditional social order.

The Expanding Pie Fueled Expanding Entitlements

Writer Ugo Bardi recently drew another distinction between Left and Right social movements: “Traditionally, the Left has emphasized rights while the Right has emphasized duties.”

As rights manifested as economic entitlements rather than political (civil liberty) entitlements, rights accrue economic costs. As Bardi observes: “Having rights is nicer than having duties, but the problem is that human rights have a cost and that this cost was paid, so far, by fossil fuels. Now that fossil fuels are on their way out, who’s going to pay?”

I would argue that the cost was also paid by higher productivity enabled by the technological, financial and social innovations of the Third Industrial Revolution, roughly speaking the interconnected advances of the second half of the 20th century.

These advances can be characterized as expanding the economic pie; that is, generating more energy, credit, technological tools, opportunities, security and capital (which includes financial, infrastructural, intellectual and social capital) for all to share in a socio-political-financial allocation broad enough to make everyone feel like they were making some forward progress.

This long-term, secular expansion of the pie naturally generated more demands for additional entitlements and rights, as the economy could clearly support the extra costs of allocating additional wealth and resources to the many.  From the point of view of the few (the elites), their own wealth continued expanding, so there was little resistance to expanding retirement, education and healthcare entitlements.

But in the 21st century, the expansion of the pie stagnated, and for many, it reversed. Adjusted for real-world inflation many households have seen their net incomes and wealth decline in the past decade.

Despite the endless media rah-rah about “growth” and “recovery,” it is self-evident to anyone who bothers to look beneath the surface of this facile PR that the pie is now shrinking. This dynamic is increasing inequality rather than reducing it.

The Shrinking Pie And Stagnant Productivity

It is a truism of economics that widespread increases in productivity are required to generate equally widespread increases in income and capital, i.e. productive wealth. To the consternation of many, productivity has stagnated since 2010; no wonder household income for all but the upper crust has gone nowhere.

If we glance at a chart of productivity, we see a strong correlation with speculative investment bubbles (the dot-com and housing bubbles 1995-2005) and speculative spikes fueled by central bank monetary stimulus (2009-10).  Absent bubbles and monumental excesses of central bank stimulus, productivity quickly sinks to its secular trend line: downwards.

Chart of US productivity growth since 1980

This next chart depicts the long-term trend line of productivity through all four industrial revolutions. Note the decline concurrent with the 4th Industrial Revolution (mobile telephony, the Internet, AI, robotics, peer-to-peer networks, etc.) and the depletion of cheap-to-access-and-refine oil:

Chart of declining GDP per capita over the past 2 centuries

The unwelcome reality is that the economy is changing in fundamental ways that cannot be reversed with policy tweaks, protests or wishful thinking.

Consider the percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP) that goes to employee compensation (wages and salaried). Labor’s share of the GDP has been in a downtrend since 1970, which not coincidentally was the peak of secular productivity:

Chart showing wages becoming a smaller percentage of GDP over time

In this below chart of the distribution of wealth in the U.S., we find the same correlation to the downtrends in productivity and labor’s share of the economy.  The bottom 90% of households’ (the many) share of the wealth pie topped out in the early 1980s and has declined precipitously since, while the wealth of the top 0.1% (the few) has more than tripled since the late 1970s:

Distribution of Wealth In the US since 1917

This next chart depicts the remarkable (and recent) spike income growth the few have recently enjoyed, at the expense of everyone else:

Chart showing Soaring Income Inequality

The increase in wealth and income inequality and the decline of productivity and labor’s share of GDP are the result of structural changes in the economy, changes with far-reaching consequences.

While it’s appealing to identify policies endorsed by self-serving insiders and elites as the source of these changes, that is far from the whole story. Much of this growing asymmetry stems from profound changes in the global economy that depreciate labor (as conventional labor is no longer scarce) and increase the gains of the top few in a “winner take most” allocation that benefits speculation, leverage and new ways of organizing labor and capital that reward the organizers far more than the users/participants.

In this new era of a steadily shrinking pie, the sources of inequality and related social problems have also shifted.  As a result, the social movements that were effective in the past are no longer effective today. Attempts to address rising inequality with the old tools are fueling frustration rather than actual solutions.

In Part 2 — Social Unrest: The Boiling-Over Point, we examine why our existing models for social change have slipped into ineffectual symbolic gestures that fuel fragmentation and frustration — and why that will lead to a dangerous boiling over of the 99% against the elites controlling the system.

When that happens (and it seems inevitable at our current trajectory), the rending of our social fabric will happen stunningly fast. The ensuing social disunity and disruption will be of the sort many alive today have never seen.

Twitter Employee Deactivates Trump"s Account For 11 Minutes & The Media Loses Its Mind

Update: Twitter has finally responded - blaming "human error"...

*  *  *

Did President Donald Trump just expertly troll every member of the #resistance?

The President"s twitter account disappeared shortly before 7 pm Thursday and was unavailable for just over ten minutes, providing the error message that the user "does not exist." But by 7:03 pm, it had been restored.

It is not clear what caused the outage, the Associated Press reported, and spokespeople for the White House and Twitter did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump hasn"t tweeted since the account was restored. Of course, many of Trump"s critics have complained that the president should shut down his account - and there was some speculation that he might do so after Gen. John Kelly took over as chief of staff. But the president has repeatedly said he believes retaining the ability to directly communicate with his supports is a valuable political tool.

Though it was short-lived, the outage prompted some hilarious reactions.

OFA Organizing for Anarchy Recruitment

If you’re on their mailing list (isn’t just about everybody?) don’t let the cunning of their purposely benign-sounding words fool you.

“Organizing for Action, a community organizing project, which is a spinoff of President Obama’s Organizing for America, appears to operate only to cause harm to and ultimately impeach President Trump.” (Washington Times, June 19, 2017)

The entire trajectory of Organizing for America:

Organizing For America—Obama’s first group was linked to BarackObama.com

Organizing For Action’s new website—OFA.US  went live on Jan. 19, 2017.

When Organizing for Action kicked off in 2009, it still used BarackObama.com as its website.

Pictures of Obama smirking from exotic tropical vacation spots send a subliminal message that the ex-president is only harmlessly happy and wishing us all well.

But Obama is not happy in exile and, as Resistance Leader, is playing a key role in the increasing violence that puts American lives at risk.

[snip]

Patriots beware:

Obama is getting ready to build on his army of Resistance out in American communities and you are being asked by email to let Organizing for America recruit you as one of his own.

[snip}

Here’s how you can turn the tables on the the most dangerous and divisive Saul Alinsky-influenced Community Organizer of all time:  Pretend you want to be one of them, a quick to anger, anarchy-pushing resister.

Sign up for OFA training.  Gather all the information they offer, then spread it as far as you can by word of mouth or on social media.

Don’t worry about having your cover blown.  Organizing for Action leaders must think you are stupid or they wouldn’t be inviting you to their membership in the first place.

This could be the start of a Resistance to Resistance Movement that puts the stability of America first and foremost.

In other words, be just like Obama, pretending to be someone you are not.

As Roger, who sounded the alarm on OFA’s “Listening Tours” posted back in 2009:

We have identified the enemy and the enemy is right here among us. Now more than ever, we have to fight for the preservation of our Judeo-Christian, democratic republic against a Communist/Islamic civilizational invasion. We have to be organized, resolute and tenacious. If we are, we will win, because God will be on our side.”

Godspeed, America!

King Dollar; Attempting to break 3-year rising support

Below looks at a long-term chart of the US Dollar, that was shared on 12/30/16. This chart highlighted that King Dollar was facing two long term resistance lines, at the 104 zone. (See Post Here). Joe Friday was pointing out this was a rare test of resistance and could be the price zone, where a major top could take place.

US dollar monthly (DXY)

CLICK ON CHART TO ENLARGE

Since Joe Friday pointed out this resistance zone, King$ has declined around 5%, which could be a good reason that Gold, Silver and Mining stocks have done very well so far this year. Below looks at an update on the price action of the US$.

US dollar monthly Weekly (DXY)

CLICK ON CHART TO ENLARGE

Line (1) has been support and resistance over the past 20-years. US$ hit the underside of this 20-year resistance line at (2), near the 104 zone highlighted in the top chart, where it stopped on a dime. Since hitting resistance line (1), it has declined around 5% and is back below two key Fibonacci levels.

King$ is now testing 3-year rising support at (3). A break of support at (3), could cause more selling pressure to come forward, causing the US$ to further weaken. The Power of the Pattern feels the US$ has to close on a weekly basis below the 93 level, before strong selling pressure would take place. If the 93 level would be taken out to the downside, suspect metals would attract buyers.

The “Resistance” Democrats are a Terrorist Party

What does #Resistance really mean? It means the overthrow of our government.

In this century, Democrats rejected the outcomes of two presidential elections won by Republicans. After Bush won, they settled for accusing him of being a thief, an idiot, a liar, a draft dodger and a mass murderer. They fantasized about his assassination and there was talk of impeachment. But elected officials gritted their teeth and tried to get things done.

This time around it’s “radically” different.

The official position, from the Senate to the streets, is “Resistance.” Leftist media outlets are feeding the faithful a fantasy that President Trump will be brought down. There is fevered speculation about the 25th Amendment, a coup or impeachment due to whatever scandal has been manufactured last.

This fantasy is part clickbait. Leftist media outlets are feeding the worst impulses of their readers. But there is a bigger and more disturbing radical endgame.

The left can be roughly divided into moderates and radicals. The distinction doesn’t refer to outcome; both want very similar totalitarian societies with very little personal freedom and a great deal of government control. Instead it’s about the tactics that they use to get to that totalitarian system.

The “moderates” believe in working from within the system to transform the country into a leftist tyranny. The “radicals” believe that the system is so bad that it cannot even be employed for progressive ends. Instead it needs to be discredited and overthrown by radicalizing a revolutionary base.

Radicals radicalize moderates by discrediting the system they want to be a part of. Where moderates seek to impose a false consensus from within the system, radicals attack the system through violent protests and terrorism. Their goal is to set off a chain of confrontations that make it impossible to maintain civil society and polarize the backlash and chaos into consolidating the left for total war.

That is what “Resistance” actually means.

[snip]

The radical left’s goal is to convince its natural base that our system of government is illegitimate. It knows that this can’t be limited to the theoretical level of ideology. Instead it must radicalize by demonstrating it. It does not seriously believe that President Trump will be removed from office by the 25th Amendment or any other aspect of the system. Instead it is feeding these fantasies so that when they fall through those on the left who believed in them will be further radicalized by their failure.

And Democrats have become complicit in the radical left’s program to bring down the government.

They have normalized the radical leftist position that our system is illegitimate. They have moved into the second phase of the left’s program of demonstrating that illegitimacy through confrontation. The final phase is to overthrow the system through actions ranging from protests to terrorism.

This is Cloward-Piven institutional sabotage on a whole other scale. The goal is to collapse our entire system of government. And the Democrats have climbed on board with it using President Trump as a pretext. But regardless of which Republican had won, the end result would have been the same.

The left makes its opposition to the Constitution, the election process and the rule of law into a crisis. And then it uses that crisis to demand a new system. It has pursued this approach successfully in local areas and in narrower causes. This is not the first time that it has embarked on such a project on the national level. But this is the first time that it has the full support of a major national political party.

And that is the true crisis that we face.

The left’s endgame is a totalitarian state. Its “moderates” pursue one by peaceful means only so long as they are allowed to hijack the system. When an election fails to go their way, the radicals brandish it as proof that the system has failed and that violent revolution is the only answer.

But what was once the obscure behavior of a deranged political fringe has become the mainstream politics of the Democrats. The Resistance theme shows that the radicals have won. The Democrats haven’t just fallen to the left. They have fallen to the radical left which believes in overthrowing our system of government through conflict and confrontation rather than covertly engineering change.

The Democrats have become a terrorist party. And their commitment to a radical revolution has plunged our political system into chaos. The left is now exactly where it wanted to be.

And a civil war has begun.

The Sunday Morning Tune-up ~ The Originalist vs the Globalist

The Sunday Morning Tune-up ~ The Originalist vs the Globalist

By Chip Murray – Posted on

What

What’s “Going Down”?

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died suddenly, mysteriously, and remotely on a ranch in rural Texas last year…and there was no autopsy. Scalia, often referred to as a “Lion of the Law”, was also the only “originalist” on the bench, which meant he regarded and was committed to every last letter of our Constitution as fixed in the firmament of human nature, as the North Star is in the firmament of the heavens…exactly as intended by the Founders.

Now take, in the sharpest of contrasts, a man like Andrew Cuomo, the Governor of New York. Governor Cuomo holds no such regard or commitment to the “original” intent of the Founders. Rather; his regard and commitment are for all things “Progressive” and thus free of the archaic chains of an old white paper, conceived by old white men, for an all-white world. In fact, he delivered a stunning and very public rebuke of originalism several years ago when he declared Conservative and Traditional New Yorkers “unwelcome” in his state. There is no doubt, if Jefferson were alive to tell you, that if Scalia was the Lion of the Law, then Andrew Cuomo is the “Artful Dodger” of it…and I wager that U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara knows it in the marrow of his bone.

There’s something else about Cuomo…something far more telling. His father’s guiding hero was St. Thomas More (talk about a lion and the North Star!). Andrew Cuomo’s is Niccolò “the end justifies the means” Machiavelli. True story. He issued copies of Machiavelli’s “The Prince” to his inner circle immediately upon taking office.

Now take these two polar opposite world views onto the context of the world stage. A stage that, by most all accounts, is highly contentious at best, and in tatters at worst. Divided seems to be the word of the day…wherever we look…from Brussels to Bangkok to Washington, our world has been divided into two teams; the Nationalist (Originalists) vs the Globalists (Progressives). What is quite remarkable in all this, is that the Vicar of Christ…the Holy See…the man who sits atop the Chair of Peter, Pope Francis has taken the side of the most unholy federation of fiends, perverts and misfits to ever set up shop. How can this be? Can absolute power corrupt so absolutely as this? And they almost had their absolute power…

I had lunch this week with two business colleagues I have tremendous respect for. Far from “Progressive”, I’m reasonably certain they both voted for Trump. Both expressed concern over Trump’s “bull in the china shop” method of governing. This suggested to me that neither of them have fully fathomed the significance of exactly who Trumps is, what he represents, and perhaps most importantly, the breathtaking scale of the global forces aligned against him…and US! Clueless, I’m sorry to say, is the perfect word.

I suspect President Trump is armed with something more damaging than his abrasive wit and personality. He knows something about them…about all of them. First they blamed Hillary’s loss on Comey. Then it was the Russians. I think it was the contents of disgraced Anthony Weiner’s laptop computer that provided the gateway into something darker and more nefariously evil than most of us can comprehend. It ties to the beltway powerbrokers’ pedophilia underground ring brought to the surface in “Pizza-gate”, which connects to the Clinton Foundation’s ties to Epstein’s Pedophile Island and sex-trafficking the victims in Haiti.

Forget about the moral confusion in the Vatican, of all places. We are watching a Man for All Seasons, a new Constantine in Donald Trump. A man who does not and will not “pay to play” is literally taking Washington and its media acolytes by storm. And they are all FREAKING OUT! How positively refreshing!

Unfortunately, most of us (my colleagues included) are unaware of what is really “Going Down” beneath the surface of things. I, being a patriot Oath Keeper, especially love #4:

4) Build a culture of non-cooperation with law enforcement. If you have any intention of working with the police, FBI, or other agencies; or if you publicly condemn anti-fascists who break the law: don’t call yourself an anti-fascist. The cops will be Trump supporters; do not collaborate with them.

The 44th President of the United States orchestrates a “resistance” against the 45th President of the United States from his OFA bunker a few short blocks from the White House.

I fear for my colleagues. I fear for my family and friends. I fear for my county and all who fail to understand and comprehend the end of their means.

Michael Moore announces ‘100 days of resistance’ against Trump Presidency

(INTELLIHUB) — Filmmaker and liberal icon Michael Moore has announced his plans to attend the Women’s March on Washington to protest Donald Trump’s inauguration later this month and has called for sore loser liberals to go further — by staging protests acts of resistance through the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency.

In an appearance, this weekend on MSNBC’s The Last Word, the 62-year-old Trumpland and Fahrenheit 9/11 director made a “call to arms” to those opposed to Trump’s presidency to join the Women’s March on Washington scheduled for January 21, the day after the presidential inauguration.

“It’s important that everybody go there,” Moore told MSNBC’s Ari Melber.

“This will have an effect. We need to throw everything at this. This man is slightly unhinged, if I can say that, and he’s a malignant narcissist. He cares very much about what people think of him. He wants to be the popular guy. And he’s going to be very upset if there’s a lot of people there.”

Moore, who was one of the first liberal political pundits to predict a Trump victory, also urged protesters to “get up off the couch” and to be a part of protests during the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency.

“We are gonna be busy, busy, busy,” Moore said, adding a rallying call to “a hundred days of resistance.”

The political pundit casually chatted about hearing the hair and makeup employees at MSNBC talking about going to the Women’s March backstage before his appearance on the program.

“That’s the new Americana. That’s what’s going to happen. And people are going to be relentless about this, so I’m optimistic,” he enthused.

In the lead up to the 2016 election, Moore labored to persuade voters to vote for former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Just weeks before election day, he released a critical documentary of Trump called Michael Moore in TrumpLand. Interestingly, a portion of the film in which Moore extols Trump’s appeal to Rust Belt voters was subsequently cut from the film and posted on the Internet where it went viral among Trump supporters.

Moore previously called for protesters to “disrupt” Trump’s inauguration on January 20th and even offered to bribe GOP elector’s to do a protest vote.
