Vanity Fair Editors Relentlessly Attacked Over "Don"t-Run-Again-Hillary" Satirical Video

It appears the McResistance is on the warpath once again, and this time they"re going after Vanity Fair, which to the surprise of many published a satirical video about Hillary Clinton"s future prospects in the days just before Christmas with the caption, "Maybe it"s time for Hillary Clinton to take up a new hobby in 2018" as part of a broader series on New Year"s resolutions. 

"Take up a new hobby in the new year," suggested Vanity Fair writer Maya Kosoff. "Volunteer work, knitting, improv comedy - literally anything that will keep you from running again."

Editor John Kelly, meanwhile, suggested that Clinton "finally put away your James Comey voodoo doll." And added further with cheerful snark, "We all know you think James Comey cost you the election and he might have, but so did a handful of other things. It’s a year later and time to move on."

Editors from the magazine’s politics and business section, Hive, published the one-minute video entitled "Six New Year"s Resolutions for Hillary Clinton" featuring themselves holding Champagne flutes while giving New Year"s advice, which includes telling the former secretary of state and failed presidential candidate to give up and retire in 2018.

Though the video is fast approaching one million views via twitter, it more noticeably has evoked an avalanche of anger and outrage in the form of over 10,000 twitter comments - the overwhelming majority of which express shock and indignation, with repeat calls for Vanity Fair to remove the video. 

One of the reporters for @VanityFair who appeared in the "don"t-run-again-Hillary" video, @mekosoff, has locked her account after being subjected to the most foul vitriol and abuse, endlessly, over several days.

At the same time Hillary supporters including celebrities, journalists, and political commentators voiced their anger using the "#CancelVanityFair" hashtag which garnered over 30,000 tweets. And predictably it didn"t take long for sexism to become the driving critique with Peter Daou, a former Clinton adviser, slamming the magazine for insulting “one of the most accomplished women in the history of the United States” while adding that he"s long defended Clinton from such "sexist attacks."

But it appears the magazine caved by issuing a vague blanket apology, though the video hasn"t been removed. A Vanity Fair spokesperson said, "It was an attempt at humor and we regret that it missed the mark." 

Of course, this didn"t placate the trolls as "the resistance" thinks Hillary Clinton should remain uniquely immune from being the object of satire and didn"t take the magazine to task over any other satirical videos in the same series. The New Year’s resolution video for Trump, for example, advises the president to delete his Twitter account and drink more Diet Coke in 2018. The Hive editors also took shots at Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Gary Cohn among others.

Meanwhile the creators of the video, which in its mockery is no harsher than your average Saturday Night Live skit, have been trolled relentlessly by Hillary supporters forcing at least one to lock her social media accounts. According to The Intercept"s Glenn Greenwald, "One of the reporters for Vanity Fair who appeared in the "don"t-run-again-Hillary" video, Maya Kosoff, has locked her account after being subjected to the most foul vitriol and abuse, endlessly, over several days."

Below are a handful of select tweets which capture the outrage over the simple satirical Hillary video... it appears the resistance mob will attack even Vanity Fair for crossing narrowly enforced boundaries. With such sensitivity 2018 is sure to be loads of fun.

The Herd Mind

The State is a state of mind; it is the herd mindset itself.

Randolph Bourne famously wrote, “War is the health of the State.” This has long been the byword for anti-war, anti-state libertarians, and rightly so. But Bourne did not mean exactly what most libertarians take this phrase to mean. To understand the maxim’s original meaning, as Bourne used it in his great unfinished essay “The State,” one must understand his distinctions among three concepts that are often conflated: Country, State, and Government.

For Bourne, a Country (or Nation) is a group of individuals bound together by cultural affinity. A State is a Country/Nation collectively mobilized for attack or protection. As he distinguished between the two:

“Country is a concept of peace, of tolerance, of living and letting live. But State is essentially a concept of power, of competition: it signifies a group in its aggressive aspects.”

The State and the Government 

And Government, according to Bourne, “is the machinery by which the Nation, organized as a State, carries out its State functions” and “a framework of the administration of laws, and the carrying out of the public force.”

What libertarians commonly refer to as “the State,” Bourne termed “the Government” instead. So, the way libertarians often interpret his famous aphorism is what Bourne would have expressed if he had written, “War is the health of the Government.” This also happens to be true, but it is not what he meant.

For Bourne, the State is not a distinct ruling body subsisting extractively on the ruled, i.e., a “gang of thieves writ large,” as the great Murray Rothbard incisively conceived it. Rather, he saw it as a certain orientation of a whole people: a spiritual phenomenon pervading an entire populace that animates and empowers such a ruling body. As Bourne expressed it:

“Government is the idea of the State put into practical operation in the hands of definite, con­crete, fallible men. It is the visible sign of the invisible grace. It is the word made flesh. And it has necessarily the limitations inherent in all practicality. Government is the only form in which we can en­vis­age the State, but it is by no means identical with it. That the State is a mystical conception is some­thing that must never be for­got­ten. Its glam­or and its significance linger be­hind the frame­work of Government and direct its activities.”

In peacetime, Bourne explained, the State is largely relegated to the background; individuals are then more concerned with their own affairs and purposes. But during the build-up to war, and especially following its breakout, the foreign enemy looms large in the public imagination. Hence, the Country is overtaken by war fever and develops what Garet Garett called a “complex of vaunting and fear.” This hybrid mania of boastful belligerence and timorous terror (“fight-or-flight”) causes the populace to regress from a civilization to a herd. The people seek safety in numbers: in a multitude unified for a single purpose (a “great end”) and directed by a single agency. The varied dance of individuals gives way to the uniform huddle and stampede of the unitary drove, with the Government as drover.

As Bourne wrote:

“The State is the organization of the herd to act offensively or defensively against another herd similarly organized.”

And in wartime, the “mystical conception” of the State “comes into its own” as the “herd-sense” becomes dominant in the Country and the “aggressive aspects” of the group come to the fore. This is what Bourne meant by, “War is the health of the State.” The dictum speaks to the flourishing of an ideal and the resulting transformation of a whole society, not merely the aggrandizement of a Government.

Yet, war is also the health of the Government, which is the single directing agency to whose banner the State-minded masses flock. Under the perceived exigencies of war, the people:

“…proceed to allow them­selves to be regimented, coerced, de­ranged in all the environments of their lives, and turned into a solid manufactory of destruction to­ward whatever other people may have, in the appointed scheme of things, come with­in the range of the Government’s disapprobation. The cit­i­zen throws off his con­tempt and indifference to Government, identifies him­self with its purposes, revives all his military memories and symbols, and the State once more walks, an au­gust presence, through the imaginations of men.”

Economically, this means that the manpower and resources of the Country undergo “mobilization”: a vast redirection away from the provision of individual consumer wants and toward the all-important war effort. In this way too, the Government swells in power and grandeur, as the consumer-directed market economy is supplanted by the Government-directed “War Economy,” or even “War Socialism” (Kriegssozialismus, as the Germans called it in World War I).

The "General Will"

In the fever of war, the individual will is sacrificed for the “General Will,” which ostensibly expresses itself through the Government. Individuals renounce their identities for the sake of uniting Voltron-like into a State, like the gestalt “Leviathan” pictured on the cover of Thomas Hobbes’s book by that name.

As Bourne put it:

“War sends the cur­rent of purpose and activity flow­ing down to the lowest lev­els of the herd, and to its re­mote branches. All the activities of society are linked together as fast as possible to this central purpose of making a military offensive or military defense, and the State be­comes what in peace­times it has vainly struggled to be­come—the inexorable arbiter and determinant of men’s businesses and attitudes and opinions.”

The herd is mobilized, not only against the foreign foe, but against any dissidents within the group who resist assimilation into the Borg-like hive- or herd-mind and who refuse to join the swarm or stampede into war: in other words, against “enemies foreign and domestic.”

 As Bourne explained:

“The State is a jealous God and will brook no rivals. Its sovereignty must pervade every­one and all feel­ing must be run into the stereo­typed forms of romantic patriotic militarism which is the traditional expression of the State herd-feeling. (…) In this great herd-machinery, dis­sent is like sand in the bearings. The State ideal is primarily a sort of blind animal push to­wards military unity. Any interference with that unity turns the whole vast impulse to­wards crush­ing it.”

The State crushes dissent through Government policies restricting civil liberties, but also through private citizens acting as “amateur agents” of the Government: who berate skeptics into silence, report critics to the authorities for “disloyalty,” or even take the security of Herd and Homeland into their own violent hands. Remember that in Bourne’s framework, the Government is by no means identical with the State. As such, the State can animate a private citizen even more than it does an officeholder. As Bourne remarked:

“In every country we have seen groups that were more loyal than the King—more patriotic than the Government—the Ulsterites in Great Britain, the Junkers in Prussia, l’Action Francaise in France, our patrioteers in America. These groups exist to keep the steer­ing wheel of the State straight, and they pre­vent the nation from ever veer­ing very far from the State ideal.”

This an extremely apt description of the Fox News types who castigate Barack Obama for his lack of “patriotism” and the insufficiency of his war-making. The spirit of the State dwells within Sean Hannity even more so than it dwells within the President of the United States. What is ironic is that a war-drumming jingo like Hannity usually imagines himself a paragon of manhood; yet his dull, stampeding herd mindset marks him out as less of a man, and more of a beast.

Bourne"s Legacy 

Randolph Bourne was not a libertarian, but a dissident progressive. Still, we libertarians can learn a great deal from him. For instance, perhaps our terminology, as penetrating and illuminating as it is, has led us to focus too much on the herdsmen in office who drive, shear, milk, and butcher us, and not enough on the more fundamental problem: our society’s bovine propensity to become a manipulable herd in the first place, especially when spooked. Occasionally thinking in terms of Bourne’s typology can be a useful corrective in this regard.

Bourne’s terminology and analysis also shed light on the all-important question of how to achieve liberation. The State lives in the minds of the Government’s victims. Simply overthrowing a Government will only spook the herd even worse. The State will not only survive such an overthrow, but it will likely even feed off of it, as the panicked herd acts even more herd-like in the crisis, granting new herdsmen even more tyrannical power than the old ones had.

The State is a state of mind; it is the herd mindset itself. As such, it can only be overthrown in the battleground of the mind. Once the State is spiritually dethroned and the populace fully transfigures from herd to civilization, the “Government,” like a shepherd without a flock, will no longer even merit its designation. It will then merely be a heavily armed, but even more heavily outnumbered, gang of rustlers writ small.

Accomplishing this becomes ever more urgent as Americans are driven into ever more calamitous wars. It is increasingly apparent that breaking the spell of the State that turns men into beasts may be the only way we can avoid being driven to self-destruction by alarmist warmongers and their terrorist symbionts, like buffalo being stampeded off a cliff by herd-spooking hunters.

 

The Yield Curve Is Crashing-er

Stoccks are at record highs on the basis that Marco Rubio might a "yes" and John McCain will make it through the weekend... but if everything is so awesome, why is the yield curve collapsing?

This is the 5th weekly plunge in the yield curve in a row - the longest streak since March 2016

 

The yield curve is now the flattest since Nov 2007, with the flattenig accelerating...

 

2017 is the fastest yield curve collapse since 2007...

 

If this is not going to end badly, we are going to need more QE - as JPMorgan shows in the chart below - each episode of QE steepened the curve and lengthened the current cycle...

Stocks Surge To All Time High On Conflicting Reports About Rubio"s Support For Tax Bill

Update: minutes after the trial balloon was floated, the initial Fox report has been denied:

• SEN. RUBIO STILL A `NO" ON TAX BILL, HASN"T SEEN TEXT YET: AIDE

Yet somehow, despite sliding on yesterday"s Rubio news, stocks have refused to react to today"s rejection, and are now trading at all time highs clearly certain that nothing can derail tax reform now.

Earlier GOP Rep. Kristi Noem said that the child tax credit demanded by Rubio, is being made refundable to $1,400 per child, Bloomberg reports. "We’re in a good spot," she say. As a reminder, yesterday Marco Rubio said the credit had to expand from $1,100 to win his vote for the overall tax legislation.

For now, however, Rubio spokeswoman said he hasn’t yet seen bill text: “We have not seen bill text, and until we see if the percentage of the refundable credit is significantly higher, then our position remains the same,” Rubio spokeswoman Olivia Perez-Cubas said in email Friday morning.

GOP Sen. Mike Lee’s office also says he hasn’t seen text; Lee has voiced similar concerns about child tax credit as Rubio.

And just like that, stocks priced in tax reform for the n^th consecutive day, because one day after speculation that Marco Rubio would be a hurdle to the passage of tax reform, which pushed stocks modestly lower, moments ago Fox - or is that Disney - reported that Marcio Rubio is a "yes" on the tax bill, sending risk assets soaring in the latest "buy-everything" euphoria.

Rubio"s turn comes shortly after Speaker Paul Ryan told the media that the Senate and House are both planning to hold votes on the bill by end-of-day Wednsday with the first vote likely coming in the House Tuesday and the Senate following either Tuesday or Wednesday. Separately, Senator Brady announced that the tax measure is now done, and should win every senator"s support.

What Happened To "What Happened": Amazon Slashes Hillary's Book Price 40% Before It Hits Shelves

Last Friday, in an attempt at humor, we shared a satirical note from The Onion suggesting that Hillary had already begun work on a follow-up book, entitled "What Also Happened," intended to define precisely who was to blame for the failure of her first book, "What Happened."

Alas, if prices are any indicator of demand, which they"re pretty much universally accepted to be unless you"re discussing minimum wages with Bernie Sanders, then Hillary may want to double down on efforts to rush out the sequel as both Amazon and Walmart have decided to slash prices of "What Happened" by 40% before the books even hit shelves.

After Hillary"s publisher Simon and Schuster suggested a price of $30, Amazon slashed prices to $17.99 earlier today...

...and Walmart quickly matched...

Of course, the reviews have already started to pour into Amazon even though no one has a copy of the book yet.  Isaac apparently hated the book because he"s tired of hearing Hillary "blame her failure on sexism."

"What happened is she can not take responsibility for many of her own actions and blames her failure on sexism.

Ironically, it"s things like this that cause people on the fence go to the other side just to spite her."

Fact or Fiction:

CHAPPAQUA, NY - Saying it would provide a candid account of her experiences writing an unsuccessful tell-all, sources confirmed Thursday that Hillary Clinton is already working on a follow-up book casting blame for the failures of her previous memoir What Happened.

“From my agent negotiating that underwhelming deal with Simon & Schuster, to the graphic designer’s lackluster cover art, to my so-called supporters who couldn’t be bothered to drop $17.99 for the hardcover copy - everyone had a hand in undermining my last book’s success,” reads a passage from the introduction to Clinton’s What Also Happened, which repeatedly decries her prior book’s “indecipherable” font and dedicates an entire chapter to lashing out at her copy editor for making her look like “an idiot third-grader.”

“I’ll never forget how Amazon buried me and how Barnes & Noble completely sabotaged me by displaying my book way in the back in that no man’s land by the CDs. Frankly, it’s obvious I got screwed on all sides.”

Accusing them of stealing her spotlight, the book reportedly concludes with a long list of every other celebrity who published a memoir in the past year.

(What's Left Of) Our Economy: The Real 'Dreamer Fakeonomics'

If you’ve been following the heated national debate about President Trump’s decision to rescind former President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, you know that an economic conventional wisdom has been quickly established. It holds that, whatever you think about the legality, propriety, or morality of ending its legalization process for the young and young-ish residents of the country who arrived as the children of illegal immigrants, the impact on the nation’s growth, employment, and productivity would be disastrous.

Sadly – but not surprisingly – an examination of the data reveals this conclusion to be quintessential fakeonomics.

Worse, these claims have been spread with techniques that have become all too typical in the nation’s political, policy, and media circles – by endlessly and credulously repeating assertions that are based either on no solid data whatever, or on unusually weak data.

Enough examples could be cited to fill a book, so let’s focus for now on one that’s just appeared in America’s leading newspaper (The New York Times) and by no less than a Nobel Prize-winning economist (columnist Paul M. Krugman).

As Krugman argued in this morning’s paper, the Trump administration’s position that DACA has “denied jobs to hundreds of thousands of Americans by allowing those same jobs to go to illegal aliens” is not only “junk economics.” But because it’s based on the (equally false, per Krugman) belief that “immigrant workers compete with less-educated native-born workers, driving their wages down and increasing income inequality,” it’s “irrelevant.”

The reason? “The Dreamers [as beneficiaries of DACA are often called] are a relatively well-educated group, very different from undocumented immigrants who came as adults.” Therefore, “letting Dreamers work is all economic upside for the rest of our nation, with no downside unless you have something against people with brown skin and Hispanic surnames.”

Needless to say, the argument that Dreamers actually tend be valuable economically on top of being young and young-ish, and slated to suffer for the sins of their parents, contributes to the image of Mr. Trump’s policy as a loser on all counts.

But the main evidence cited by Krugman doesn’t justify this conclusion at all. It comes from a Times feature posted on Tuesday that purports to show that “DACA-eligible immigrants have higher-skilled jobs” than other illegal immigrant workers.

Two big problems here, however. First, the statistics presented in this post show that this standard represents an awfully low bar. Second, the differences revealed by these numbers between DACA-eligible illegals and other illegals is decidedly unimpressive.

For instance, what’s the occupation of the greatest percentage of workers in both groups? “Food preparation and serving” (16 percent). That sector of the economy sure isn’t known for creating great jobs. Number two for the Dreamers and those eligible for this designation? “Sales and related.” This category also features the biggest absolute occupation gap between the Dreamer-types and non-Dreamers, employing 15 percent of the former but only six percent of the latter. But these kinds of jobs sound pretty dead-end, too. Ditto for “Office and administrative support” (which employs the next greatest share of Dreamer-eligible workers). Worse, both the sales and the office jobs are being killed off left and right these days by automation.

Equally revealing: The next four biggest employers of Dreamer-eligible workers are the kinds of blue-collar-dominated categories that typically don’t require much education, and which therefore place Dreamer types in direct competition with their “less-educated native-born counterparts.” These categories – “Construction and extraction”; “Production”; “Transportation and material moving”; and “Building and grounds cleaning and maintenance” – employ fully 32 percent of the Dreamer types. An additional seven percent work in the comparable occupations of Personal care and service and Installation, maintenance, and repair.

It’s true that, in what’s officially considered a very low unemployment economy, the Dreamer-eligible workers may not be taking jobs from the native-born (or from legal immigrants). At the same time, their presence may well explain some of the nation’s nearly multi-decade low labor force participation rate. Moreover, the laws of supply and demand strongly indicate that the influx of Dreamers into these labor markets is holding down wages, all else equal.

This Times feature reveals something else fishy about the new Dreamer-nomics conventional wisdom. Much is based on a survey that should prompt considerable skepticism – and especially from reporters and editors, who are supposed to be professional skeptics.

Here I’m talking about the insistence that DACA recipients (in the words of the liberal, pro-DACA Center for American Progress), thanks to their new status “are making significant contributions to the economy by buying cars and first homes, which translate into more revenue for states and localities in the form of sales and property taxes. Some are even using their entrepreneurial talents to help create new jobs and further spur economic growth by starting their own businesses” as well as earning higher wages.

Yet there are no hard numbers behind this “finding.”

Instead, it’s based on a widely cited survey conducted by a researcher employed by the Center and other pro-DACA groups that asks Dreamers about their experiences following the Obama decision. On the one hand, there can be little doubt that workers with some legal protections are going to do better than workers with none. On the other hand, how sustainable will these gains be, especially in an economy with poor recent economic and social mobility? Moreover, because DACA-style legalization is such a boon to recipients for reasons beyond economics, too, don’t the respondents have a strong incentive to play up their progress?

I’ve actually been moving toward the position that the Dreamers should be allowed to stay in the country permanently, and possibly get that proverbial “path to citizenship” – largely because they came out of the shadows and registered with the authorities based on a presidential promise. It’s not their fault that the promise’s legality was dubious at best. Best of all would be a Dreamer amnesty coupled with border security and other immigration policy measures smart enough to prevent yet another powerful illegal immigration magnet from being constructed.

But policy shifts based on clearly hyped and mis-interpreted data rarely turn out well. If Americans do decide to give the DACA recipients the blessings of legal residence in the United States, they should at least do it with their eyes wide open to the likeliest economic impact.

Dopey Playboy WH Correspondent Milks Spotlight By Verbally Attacking Mike Cernovich On Camera

Playboy Magazine White House correspondent Brian Karem has risen to recent notoriety as the MSM"s White House Press Corps defender-in-chief. After Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders addressed the topic of MSM bias on Tuesday - referencing an undercover video released by Project Veritas featuring a CNN Producer effectively admitting that the network is Fake News, the Playboy White House correspondent decided enough was enough.

Perhaps sensing an opportunity to make some big boy friends in the MSM snake-pit, Karem shot up and issued a whiny condemnation of Sanders for "inflaming everybody right here." Karem"s impassioned diatribe was immediately shot down by Press Secretary Sanders, and was criticized as a lame attempt to seek relevancy by many - including porn star Jenna Jameson.

One Day Later

Outside of the White House, Playboy"s Fake Crusader stormed up to alt-right journalist Mike Cernovich in an expletive-laden faux rage - accusing Cernovich of having an opinion.

"You don"t understand journalism. You don"t understand what we"re really here for... You"re like every other god-damned guy who comes in here with a fu*kin" opinion, and instead of listening, you wanna grandstand at the end of a god-damned meeting"

Says the guy who was grandstanding at the end of a meeting...

Cernovich replied he wanted to hold the left accountable for their actions, which Karem rebuked. After patiently waiting for his turn to talk, Cernovich then disarmed Karem - asking him what he thought about Obama prosecuting more journalists under the Espionage Act than any other president. The exasperated Karem then said "Don"t get me started, that pisses me off too!"

To top it off, after Karem began his diatribe criticizing Cernovich"s right to free speech for being like "every other god-damned guy who comes in here with a fu*kin" opinion," the Playboy correspondent then offers up a cliché "I disagree with what you have to say, but will defend to the death your right to say it."

At the end of the exchange, we see Brian Karem "come out of character" as Cernovich offers him a handshake...

PIECZENIK EXPLODES: ISSUES WARNING TO TRUMP, MATTIS AND MCMASTER ABOUT GOING TO WAR IN SYRIA

America"s foremost expert in international affairs, having served under 5 Presidents, instrumental in the Camp David accords, in addition to playing a key role in regime changes around the globe for decades, Dr. Steve Pieczenik exploded with rage on the Alex Jones show yesterday -- warning Trump and his team that war crimes would follow if they pursued a neocon agenda of war in Syria, which the American people do not want.
 
"This is a warning to our generals, Mcmaster, and others, who think they can do a regime change in Syria. Number one, that will not be possible, not with the military, not with all the forces you have and not with the quality of the soldiers you have, the generals. Any notion of a regime change through force is both absurd or criminal. The issue of Syria and Assad have no national security interests to us at all. This will be an incredible dereliction of duty if we go to war in Syria."
 
He then warned Mcmaster and Mattis directly, saying that he will "come forth, and be tried for criminal activity, as will Mathis."

"There is no reason to put our men and women in harm"s way for oil pipelines, or whatever nonsense that is military industrial complex thinks we need to do to get in the middle east. We have no interest in the middle east."

Dr. Pieczenik made his first public appearance in more than 30 years during the Presidential elections, saying in no uncertain terms that he represented a faction of the American intelligence community that would not allow Hillary Clinton to become the next President. Moreover, he claimed to be part of an organization that released the Podesta emails to Wikileaks. Interestingly, the mainstream media continues to ignore the good Doctor -- in spite of the fact that is resume is anything but conspiratorial. He is the real deal.
 
At one point in the interview, he got so heated that Jones had to cut him off when he threatened legal action against the President.
 

"If this goes any step further, this is a warning to our generals, to our President, and anyone involved. Once again, we will react quite vociferously and strongly. This is grounds for all types of legal action against the President."

 
He further elaborated on the situation in Syria as a war that is unwinnable, describing how the Assad family was firmly entrenched and could not be displaced by American forces, who have "no idea what they"re doing."

"The people I know in the military are increasing their force structures to the degree that there is no strategy whatsoever. If you have no strategy, and regime change isn"t a strategy, do not go to war."
 
"The President needs to understand, if he goes to war, that"s his problem and we will have a major blowback, domestically. Our military is not prepared for this type of war. Our generals have no idea what they"re doing."

 
A confused Jones, obviously caught off guard by the acrimonious tone of Dr. Pieczenik, asked what had changed from Friday to cause him to issues these warnings.
 
Pieczenik described, from a psyops point of view, the things he learned over the weekend that caused him to worry.

"But once I hear, and I understand there are more forces placed there over the weekend, there was artillery placed in there. And in fact, they are creating in the White House, what we call a dichotomy or two messages."

Watergate's Bob Woodward: "Press Shouldn't Whine About Trump, It Doesn't Work With The Public"

Infamous Watergate reporter Bob Woodward had some uncomfortable words for the mainstream media"s safe-space-seekers. Following a tempestuous few days as the media and the White House toss propaganda grenades at one another, on Friday"s broadcast of MSNBC"s "Hardball" show, the Washington Post Associate Editor stated that:

the press “shouldn’t whine, and if we sound like we are an interest group only concerned with ourselves, it doesn’t work with the public. At the same time, we need to continue the in-depth inquiries, the investigations.”

Woodward begins at 6:45:

Woodward added that it’s not in the interest of either the Trump White House or the media to war with each other.

"I think everyone has accelerated this work. The other question to ask, is there any justification for Trump and people like — in his White House responding this way? And the only justification I can think of, which really isn’t a justification, but it accounts for emotional spasm of, my God, this is enemy of the people, I know that reporters have talked to people in the Trump house, — Trump White House about very sensitive intelligence operations, that we find out about in the press. And I think Trump is horrified that this is out there. And these are not necessarily things that are going to be published, but Trump is a newcomer saying, my God how do reporters know about these things? And so it’s — we’ve got to stop it.”

“[I]t’s not in our interest, the media’s interest to have a war with the Trump White House. It’s not in Trump’s interest to have this war.”

And on the heels of Dennis Kucinich"s warnings, The Intercept"s Glenn Greenwald, who opposes Trump for a variety of reasons, warns that siding with the evidently powerful Deep State in the hopes of undermining Trump is dangerous. As TheAntiMedia"s Carey Wedler notes, Greenwald asserted in an interview with Democracy Now, published on Thursday, that this boils down to a fight between the Deep State and the Trump administration.

Though Greenwald has argued the leaks were “wholly justified” in spite of the fact they violated criminal law, he also questioned the motives behind them.

“It’s very possible — I’d say likely — that the motive here was vindictive rather than noble,” he wrote. “Whatever else is true, this is a case where the intelligence community, through strategic (and illegal) leaks, destroyed one of its primary adversaries in the Trump White House.”

According to an in-depth report by journalist Mike Lofgren:

“The Deep State does not consist of the entire government. It is a hybrid of national security and law enforcement agencies: the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Justice Department. I also include the Department of the Treasury because of its jurisdiction over financial flows, its enforcement of international sanctions and its organic symbiosis with Wall Street.”

As Greenwald explained during his interview:

“It’s agencies like the CIA, the NSA and the other intelligence agencies, that are essentially designed to disseminate disinformation and deceit and propaganda, and have a long history of doing not only that, but also have a long history of the world’s worst war crimes, atrocities and death squads.”

Greenwald believes this division is a result of the Deep State’s disapproval of Trump’s foreign policy and the fact that the intelligence community overwhelmingly supported Hillary Clinton over Trump because of her hawkish views. Greenwald noted that Mike Morell, acting CIA chief under Obama, and Michael Hayden, who ran both the CIA and NSA under George W. Bush, openly spoke out against Trump during the presidential campaign.

Greenwald asserts the the CIA preferred Clinton because, like the clandestine agency, she supported regime change in Syria. In contrast, Trump dismissed America’s practice of nation-building and declined to tow the line on ousting foreign leaders, instead advocating working with Russia to defeat ISIS and other extremist groups.

“So, Trump’s agenda that he ran on was completely antithetical to what the CIA wanted,” Greenwald argued. “Clinton’s was exactly what the CIA wanted, and so they were behind her. And so, they’ve been trying to undermine Trump for many months throughout the election. And now that he won, they are not just undermining him with leaks, but actively subverting him.”

“[In] the closing months of the Obama administration, they put together a deal with Russia to create peace in Syria. A few days later, a military strike in Syria killed a hundred Syrian soldiers and that ended the agreement. What happened is inside the intelligence and the Pentagon there was a deliberate effort to sabotage an agreement the White House made.”

Greenwald, who opposes Trump for a variety of reasons, warns that siding with the evidently powerful Deep State in the hopes of undermining Trump is dangerous. “Trump was democratically elected and is subject to democratic controls, as these courts just demonstrated and as the media is showing, as citizens are proving,” he said, likely alluding to a recent court ruling that nullified Trump’s travel ban.

He continued:

“But on the other hand, the CIA was elected by nobody. They’re barely subject to democratic controls at all. And so, to urge that the CIA and the intelligence community empower itself to undermine the elected branches of government is insanity.”

He argues that mentality is “a prescription for destroying democracy overnight in the name of saving it,” highlighting that members of both prevailing political parties are praising the Deep State’s audacity in leaking details of Flynn’s conversations.

As he wrote in his article, “…it’s hard to put into words how strange it is to watch the very same people — from both parties, across the ideological spectrum — who called for the heads of Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning, Tom Drake, and so many other Obama-era leakers today heap praise on those who leaked the highly sensitive, classified SIGINT information that brought down Gen. Flynn.”

He also points out the left’s hypocrisy in condemning Flynn for lying when James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence during the Obama administration, perpetuated lies without ever being held accountable.

Ohio State Offers Students An Inauguration Day "Safe Space"

As America"s precious millennial snowflakes continue to wrestle with the fact that Donald J. Trump is now the President of the United States, irrespective of how many tears have flooded college campuses around the country, Ohio State University has announced they will be providing a "safe space" for students to gather to contemplate and internalize Trump"s inauguration.  Hosted by "The Women"s Place", the "safe space" activities will include "poetry reading workshops, a community mural art project, and campus teach-ins"...because when you can"t handle a loss there"s no better cure than a group coloring project.

On January 20, 2017, the Student Life Multicultural Center (SL MCC) is hosting “I, too, am America” Inauguration Day 2017. Inspired by Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” this one-day event will include poetry reading workshops, a community mural art project, and campus teach-ins. The purpose of this event is to foster a safe space for the Ohio State campus community to connect with one another, support aspirations, and empower growth and change.

The MCC is currently reaching out to graduate students, faculty, and staff to host 45 minute teach-in sessions. After attending one of the programs, attendees will be able to:

• Define social justice and identify at least two social justice issues


• Identify at least one lesson, idea, tool, or strategy to apply to their academic and personal experiences


• Meet at least two new people as well as reconnect with at least one old friend/acquaintance


• Describe one point of inspiration, motivation or empowerment

According to the College Fix, the event will actually host several separate "safe spaces" with one reserved for viewing the inauguration festivities and another set aside to give OSU"s snowflakes the opportunity to “pause, reflect and share."

The “I, too, am America” event is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include three concurrent offerings from noon to 3 p.m.: a screening of the inauguration festivities in one room; another room set aside to “pause, reflect and share”; and a third swath of rooms for teach-ins by grad students, faculty and staff.

The event was reportedly inspired by Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too,” and will also include poetry reading workshops and a community mural art project.

Of course, OSU isn"t the only university forced to coddle their perpetually sensitive students today as the University of Connecticut and many others will host similar events all around the country.

Ohio State is not the only campus offering such a venue. The University of Connecticut will host “The People’s Inauguration,” slated to be held at the same time as the swearing in ceremony, oath of office and inaugural address.

Like at Ohio State, the goal of the UConn event is to promote social justice and solidarity as Trump takes office, event organizers said.

Other students plan to express themselves in a more aggressive manner. A student socialist group has organized a nationwide walkout on Friday to protest the presidential inauguration, claiming Trump is planning to “unleash a storm of attacks” on various segments of the American population. Students at dozens of colleges are expected to participate.
