Yummy! Weekly Chocolate Snack Protects Against Atrial Fibrillation

If your significant other hands you a box of chocolates, your heart might skip a beat; but that’s pretty much the only time you want to feel your heart flutter. Even sweeter, eating what’s in that box may protect you from a dangerous form of heart palpitations called atrial fibrillation, a study shows.


Published in May of 2017 in the journal Heartthe study found that adults who ate chocolate 1-3 times per month were 10-20% less likely to suffer from atrial fibrillation, or AFib, than those who snacked on chocolate once a month or less. [1]


Discovering the Heart-Healthy Properties of Chocolate


Researchers looked at long-term data regarding the diets of more than 55,500 men and women aged 50-64 years old in Denmark. The participants submitted information relating to their eating habits upon entering the study, between 1993 and 1997.



The researchers then used data from Denmark’s national health registry to determine which participants had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation since the start of the study. The data revealed that 3,350 people had been diagnosed with AFib over an average of 13.5 years.


They found that:


  • People who ate approximately 1 oz. of chocolate per week had a 17% lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation by the end of the study compared to those who ate less than an ounce of chocolate a month.

  • Participants who consumed 2-6 oz. of chocolate a week were 20% less likely to develop AFib by the end of the study.

  • Women who ate just one serving of chocolate a week were found to be the least likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. The biggest risk reduction for men was associated with eating 2-6 servings of chocolate per week. [1]

Many of the health benefits associated with chocolate are found in dark chocolate, but most people in Denmark consume milk chocolate. The researchers said they weren’t sure they’d find such a large reduction in AFib risk among the population. [2]


Elizabeth Mostofsky, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and one of the leaders of the study, said:



“We were pleasantly surprised that — despite the fact that most of the chocolate may have [had] relatively low cocoa concentrations — we were still able to see robust findings.” [2]



However, the amount of cocoa in chocolate varies significantly between the U.S. and Denmark. In the United States, milk chocolate must contain 10% cocoa solids – the suspected beneficial ingredient, compared to Denmark, where the sweet treat is required to contain 30%. [3]


The study’s authors note in an editorial published alongside the research that chocolate lovers had fewer cases of hypertension and diabetes, and had overall lower blood pressure – all factors that could help explain why those same individuals were less likely to develop atrial fibrillation. [2]

Atrial fibrillation is believed to be caused by the release of certain molecules that damage heart tissue. Chocolate contains flavanols that can ward off the type of inflammation that can lead to tissue damage. Furthermore, flavanols may counteract the clots that could form when an irregular heartbeat allows blood to pool in the heart. [3]


Past studies have shown that eating chocolate can reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack, as well as lower blood pressure and even prevent obesity.


Atrial Fibrillation



Atrial fibrillation is a quivering or irregular heartbeat, according to the American Heart Association. The condition can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications.

A healthy heart normally contracts and relaxes to a regular beat. However, in people with AFib, the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) beat irregularly (quiver) instead of maintaining a regular beat to effectively move blood into the ventricles. [4]


Many people with atrial fibrillation are unaware that they have it; yet it affects more than 33 million people worldwide, and an estimated 25% of adults will develop the heart condition sometime in their lifetime, the accompanying editorial states.

Chalk up another win for organic whole foods. Research has found that organic food contains more antioxidants than conventionally-grown food and may be one of the most potent ways to fight aging, reduce oxidative stress, and support energy.


Organic Food Contains More Antioxidants


A comprehensive review that’s set to be published in the British Journal of Nutrition has found that, along with the above reasons to go organic,organic foods contain higher amounts of antioxidants (17 percent more) than non-organic. Antioxidants can help reduce (or at least slow down) damage to your cells — or what we call aging. Countless studies have found that antioxidants can reduce your risk of any number of chronic diseases. [1]


Other Benefits of Organic Food



The benefits of organic food are no secret and include:


  • No GMOs

  • Better freshness

  • No growth hormones

  • No antibiotics

  • Animals aren’t fed animal by-products

The review also found that organic food contains less of the toxic metal cadmium as well as less pesticides. Just a few of the issues that have been linked to pesticides include headaches, nausea, reproductive issues, cancer, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, impaired brain development, and behavioral disorders. The less you’re exposed to this trash, the better. [2]

Your health is only as good as the food you eat. Following a regular diet based on nutrient-rich, organic food is one of the best things you can do to age gracefully. Supplying your body with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and healthy fatty acids helps you feel young and full of energy.


Antioxidants


Unhealthy food, artificial ingredients like high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), and other environmental and lifestyle toxins produce free radicals that damage the cells in your body. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and support the body’s ability to protect and repair itself.



A two-year French study found that people who consumed the most antioxidants aged more slowly, lived longer, and had fewer health problems.[1] A study from Brigham Young University found that antioxidants support healthy eyes in the face of aging.[2]


The following foods are a great source of antioxidants.


Berries


Berries, specifically blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, goji berries, and blackberries contain a class of antioxidants called flavonoids. Anthocyanins, a subset of flavonoids, are antioxidant pigments that give berries their rich blue, red, and purple hues. Studies indicate that flavonoids and anthocyanins can soothe occasional inflammation and strengthen the immune system.[3]


Pomegranates


Pomegranates are a superfood that have been appreciated for thousands of years. They owe their bright red color and healthful properties to antioxidant pigments called polyphenols.[4]


Grapes


Grapes, especially red and purple grapes, contain an antioxidant called resveratrol which has been found to extend lifespan in animal testing. Resveratrol is also found in red wine, but there are many good reasons to restrict your alcohol intake or avoid it altogether. You can get the same antioxidants from grapes or organic, no-added-sugar grape juice.[5]


Dark Chocolate


Dark chocolate is another source of polyphenols. Just remember—the darker the better. Skip the milk chocolate and look for an option with at least 60% cocoa.[6]


Cruciferous Vegetables


It’s hard to beat cruciferous vegetables when it comes to certain antioxidants, such as isothiocyanates and indole-3-carbinol. Many organizations, including the National Cancer Institute, recommend eating cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts every day.[7]


Green Tea


After water, green tea is the most consumed beverage on earth, and with good reason. Green tea offers a wide variety of robust antioxidants that protect cells from oxidative damage.[8]


Unsaturated Fat


Although saturated fat from meat and dairy can raise your cholesterol and put you at risk for heart disease and stroke, unsaturated fat promotes normal cholesterol levels and is an important part of a healthy diet.[9] There are two kinds of unsaturated fat—monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat. Omega-3 fatty acids, a beneficial type of polyunsaturated fat, help maintain heart health.[10] Below are some of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids.


Fish


At Global Healing Center, we encourage a vegan lifestyle, but we realize that it may not be for everyone. If you choose not to abide by a plant-based diet, then at least select lean meat. Fish are a good option and just happen to be an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Farm-raised fish are often subject to poor conditions and best avoided. When considering wild-caught fish, keep in mind that mercury exposure can be a risk; children and pregnant women should be mindful of fish consumption.[11]


Avocados


Avocados have seen a surge in popularity lately, and it’s not (only) due to the tastiness of guacamole. According to researchers, eating an avocado a day supports normal cholesterol levels and boosts brain health. These benefits may be related to avocados’ high omega-3 content.[12, 13]


Flaxseeds



Flaxseeds are a plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, and other nutrients. They’re a versatile seed that can be used whole, cracked, ground, or used to make flaxseed oil. Flaxseeds are a great addition to baked goods, smoothies, salads, or granola. You can even mix them with water and use as a vegan egg substitute!


Vitamins and Minerals


Your diet should provide the right amount of essential vitamins and minerals from natural, unprocessed, organic food. Avoid processed food, it’s often stripped of nutrients only to have artificial nutrients added back later in the process. Below are a few great, natural sources of vitamins and minerals.


Dark Leafy Greens


Dark leafy greens have a low glycemic index and are low in calories, carbohydrates, and sodium, but high in vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A, C, E, and K can be found abundantly in salad greens, kale, and spinach while bok choy and mustard greens are excellent sources of B-complex vitamins. Dark leafy greens also contain high levels of fiber, iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium.[14]


Beans


An important staple in any plant-based diet, beans provide protein and are among the few plant foods that contain the amino acid lysine, an essential amino acid necessary for human health. Beans provide a generous supply of folate—a B-complex vitamin essential for the production of red blood cells. They also offer potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.[15]


Whole Grains


When grains are refined, the outer bran and germ are stripped away, leaving only the starch. Whole grains retain all of the nutritional potential of the original kernel with the bran, germ, and endosperm. Whole grains are generally an excellent source of dietary fiber, iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin E.[16] Standard whole grains like brown rice, barley, and oats are okay, but alternative grains like quinoa, millet, buckwheat, amaranth, and kaniwa are a step above.


Probiotics


Your gut is home to a complex ecosystem of beneficial bacteria that support everything from metabolism and immune function to digestive health and even mental balance.[17]Probiotic-rich food and supplements contain live, active bacterial cultures that can take up residence in your gut and boost your microbiota. Below are several types of food that are an excellent source of beneficial bacteria.


Yogurt


Yogurt is one of the more famous probiotic foods, but not all types of yogurt provide probiotics and certainly not all yogurt is healthy—some have more added sugar than a candy bar. Look for a vegan yogurt that is low in sugar, made with almonds, coconuts, cashews, or hemp, and packs a probiotic punch.[18]


Kefir


Similar to yogurt, kefir is a cultured milk beverage that likely originated centuries ago in Eastern Europe. Kefir is a potent probiotic food and a significant source of thiamin, B-12, calcium, folate, vitamin K, magnesium, and phosphorous.[19]


Kombucha


A type of fermented tea, kombucha is a good source of probiotics and may support mental health, heart health, and immune function. Although kombucha has been popular for over 1500 years, it’s only recently begun to gain momentum in the United States.[20]


Kimchi


What do you get when you take already healthy foods like cabbage, radish, garlic, red pepper, onion, and ginger, and ferment them? A legitimate superfood. Not only is kimchi loaded with antioxidants, it’s an excellent source of vitamin C, B vitamins, beta-carotene, calcium, potassium, iron, and dietary fiber.[21]


Prebiotics


You can’t talk about probiotics without mentioning prebiotics. Prebiotics are fiber-rich foods that feed and nourish the friendly bacteria in your gut.[22] Some excellent prebiotic foods include bananas, berries, legumes, garlic, onions, whole grains, and nuts.


Nuts


The British Journal of Nutrition reports that nuts are a heart-healthy food that encourage healthy cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease.[3] With a relatively high vitamin E content, nuts promote normal blood pressure, help with weight loss, and help keep blood sugar under control.[23] Below are some of the healthiest nuts.


Almonds


Almonds are rich in monounsaturated fat, fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, copper, and phytonutrients. They support normal cholesterol and help reduce occasional inflammation and oxidative stress—all without raising blood sugar.[24]


Walnuts


Animal studies have found that a diet rich in walnuts may promote prostate health, support normal cholesterol, and encourage normal insulin levels.[25]


Brazil Nuts


Brazil nuts are one of the richest plant sources of selenium, a key nutrient that supports a healthy thyroid.[26]


Pecans


Pecans provide two types of vitamin E—alpha-tocopherols and gamma-tocopherols. When you eat pecans, the gamma-tocopherols can lower LDL cholesterol levels by as much as 33%.[27]


Water


Water is vital for every function in the body. Even mild dehydration can make you feel bad and cause constipation, affect kidney function, or prompt a headache.[28]


How much water should you drink? The folk wisdom number of eight glasses per day is a start, but a better rule of thumb would be to drink half your body weight in fluid ounces. In other words, if you weigh 160 lbs, you should drink 80 fluid ounces of water. Bear in mind that your individual needs vary according to your age, activity level, and health status.

Resveratrol may Benefit Your Arteries, Especially if You Have Type 2 Diabetes

Resveratrol – a substance found in red wine, peanuts, and berries – may reduce artery stiffness in people with Type 2 diabetes, according to a new study presented in early May at the American Heart Association’s 2017 Scientific Sessions in Minneapolis. [1]


The study’s senior author, Dr. Naomi M. Hamburg, of the Boston University School of Medicine, said:


“This adds to emerging evidence that there may be interventions that may reverse the blood vessel abnormalities that occur with aging and are more pronounced in people with Type 2 diabetes and obesity.”

For the study, researchers recruited 57 obese, middle-aged patients with Type 2 diabetes. Nearly 2/3 of the participants were African American, and slightly more than half were women.


The aorta, the largest artery in the body, stiffens with age and illness, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Researchers tested the participants’ arterial stiffness using a test called the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, or CFPWV, after the volunteers consumed daily doses of 100 mg/day of resveratrol for 2 weeks, followed by 300 mg/day of resveratrol for 2 weeks.


The test was performed a second time after participants underwent comparable placebo dosing for a total of 4 weeks.


In addition, researchers assessed the ability of the participants’ blood vessels to expand and relax as needed to allow for changes in blood flow, an important indicator of healthy blood vessel function.


Overall, the study found that participants who took the resveratrol supplements had less arterial stiffness, but it wasn’t statistically significant.


In a subset of 23 patients who had severe aortic stiffness at the beginning of the study, however, the 300 mg dose of resveratrol reduced aortic stiffness by 9.1%, and the 100 mg dose reduced aortic stiffness by 4.8%. [2]


Among the patients that took a placebo for 4 weeks, aortic stiffening worsened.


Past studies in animals showed that resveratrol activates a gene (SIRT1) that seems to delay aging and development of several diseases. To test whether the same thing occurs in humans, researchers took samples from the blood vessel linings of 7 patients and looked at SIRT1 activity. After resveratrol supplementation, they found that gene activity increased slightly in humans.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the antioxidant can undo age-related changes in the arteries, but it’s a step towards helping scientists figure out how resveratrol can reverse age-related changes in the arteries.

Lead study author, Dr. Ji-Yao Ella Zhang, Ph.D., also of the Boston University, said:


“We found that resveratrol also activates the longevity gene SIRT1 in humans, and this may be a potential mechanism for the supplements to reduce aortic stiffness.


However, the changes in this small and short-term study are not proof. Studies with longer treatment are needed to test the effects of a daily resveratrol supplement on vascular function.” [1]


Hamburg cautions that resveratrol may not be as beneficial to people without Type 2 diabetes.


“The effect of resveratrol may be more about improving structural changes in the aorta, and less about the relaxation of blood vessels, and people with more normal aortic stiffness may not get as much benefit.” [3]

Scientists Develop a Milk Chocolate as Healthy as Dark Chocolate

A lot of people love dark chocolate, but let’s face it – the bitterness and lack of milky sweetness is sometimes a turn-off. What dark chocolate sometimes lacks in flavor, it makes up for in health benefits. But now scientists have come up with a way to make milk chocolate as healthy as its dark counterpart.


Researchers from the University of North Carolina took phenolic compounds from peanut skins, turned them into a sweet edible powder, and added them to milk chocolate to alter the health benefits of the product. [1]


Phenolic acids are what give dark chocolate its antioxidants. These antioxidants protect against cellular damage from the oxidative stress of free radicals. Oh, but we’re just getting started.  Nibbling on a piece of antioxidant-rich dark chocolate comes with some pretty sweet health perks, including:



  • Reduced signs of aging

  • Lower risk of Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis (MS), heart disease, and cancer

  • Stroke prevention

  • Decreased risk of colon cancer

  • Enhanced glucose (blood sugar) metabolism

  • Improved mood

  • Improved brain function

  • Fewer PMS issues

In the souped-up milk chocolate, researchers used the food additive maltodextrin to cut the bitter flavor from the peanut skins. The substance is typically derived from GMO corn. Tapioca maltodextrin is considered safer, but it’s harder to come by and rarely used by the food industry. The researchers didn’t specify which type of maltodextrin they used, but it’s safe to assume it was corn-derived. [2]




Used as a food filler, thickener, and preservative, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers maltodextrin safe for human consumption. However, it is known to spike your blood sugar, so it’s not safe for people with diabetes or insulin resistance.


In all fairness, though, most commercially-made milk chocolate already contains maltodextrin.


Eighty people were given samples of the milk chocolate containing the compounds and regular milk chocolate, and the taste-testers couldn’t tell the difference, the authors wrote in the Journal of Food Science. [1]


The tests revealed that the amount of peanut skins needed to transform the chocolate was so minimal that people didn’t even notice their presence.


Lead author Lisa Dean said:


“If applied to commercial products, peanut skin extracts would allow consumers to enjoy mild tasting products and have exposure to compounds that have proven health benefits.”


Another perk is that it makes use of peanut skins that would otherwise be considered food waste.
