150-Foot Asteroid Skims By Earth At Eerily Close Distance

Just hours after being spotted, a 150-foot asteroid skimmed by Earth dangerously close. Astronomers spotted the asteroid on April 15, and not long later, passed by the globe at a distance of 119,500 miles.

Astronomers named Asteroid 2018 GE3, was closest to Earth at around 2.41 a.m. ET on April 15 when it was spotted about 119,500 miles away. EarthSky.org reported that that’s much closer than the moon, which orbits Earth at an average distance of 238,900 miles. GE3 also passed close to the moon later that morning on its journey around the sun. Asteroid 2018 GE3, an Apollo-type earth-crossing asteroid, was flying through space at 66,174 miles per hour (106,497 km/h).

According to EarthSky.org, Asteroid 2018 GE3 could be as much as six times bigger than the Chelyabinsk meteorite, which exploded over central Russia in 2013. When the rock hit the atmosphere it caused a bright flash, and thousands of fragments fell throughout the region of Chelyabinsk, breaking windows and injuring about 1,500 people. If GE3 had entered Earth’s atmosphere it could have caused similar, if not more severe, damage. -Time

Earth has had several close encounters, but no real and tangible threat has arisen in recent years of an asteroid impacting the planet. The asteroid was first observed by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey project, based at the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Lab in Tucson, Arizona.

With an estimated diameter of 157 to 361 feet (48 to 110 meters), asteroid 2018 GE3 has about three to six times the diameter of the space rock that penetrated the skies over Chelyabinsk, Russia in February 2013, causing some 1,500 people to seek treatment for injuries, mostly from flying glass.

If the asteroid had entered our atmosphere, a great portion of the space rock would have disintegrated due to friction with the air. However, some of an asteroid this size might have gotten through to Earth’s surface, and an asteroid this big is capable of causing some regional damage, depending on various factors such as composition, speed, entry angle, and location of impact. It might make you feel better (or worse) to know that asteroids enter Earth’s atmosphere unnoticed on a fairly regular basis.

For example, in 2014, scientists announced 26 atom-bomb-scale asteroid impacts since 2000 that were discovered in data from the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization, which operates a network of sensors that monitors Earth around the clock listening for the infrasound signature of nuclear detonations. Earth’s atmosphere does a good job of protecting us from incoming asteroids. Most explode high in the atmosphere, or over an ocean, and therefore do no harm. –EarthSky.org

Earth wasn’t in danger with this asteroid’s close passing, but there are many that could pose a threat in the future. Astronomers have increased their programs to seek near-Earth asteroids like 2018 GE3, but sometimes, like this time and as in 2013 with the Chelyabinsk event, asteroids do still surprise us.

Connection? President Trump Authorizes NASA To Return Americans To The Moon As Experts Investigate “Alien Comet” That Recently Sailed Past Earth

President Donald Trump recently signed a new directive that reauthorizes NASA to return American astronauts to the moon in a move that directly countered the Obama administrations push to privatize space exploration.

Complete with multiple astronauts in attendance, Trump made “Space Policy Directive 1” official which not only allows the country to once again put man on the moon, it also lays the groundwork for an eventual mission to Mars.

“This marks an important step in returning American astronauts to the Moon for long term exploration,” said Trump, while also implying that there may eventually be a base built on the moon as well as “potential” mining activities.

“We’re about to begin new journeys of exploration and discovery and once again imagine possibilities awaiting in those big, beautiful stars, and dare to dream big,” Trump continued.

In addition to “reclaiming our proud destiny in space,” Trump said the new directive will spur innovation—including the development of technologies that can be leveraged for military applications.

The mission to the Moon, it’s clear, is more than just about restoring American pride—it’s also about making sure the US continues to be a part of the 21st century space race.

Vice President Mike Pence, who’s the chairman of the National Space Council, spoke after Trump, saying it’s a “momentous occasion in the history of American space exploration”—one that will ensure Americans “lead in space once again.”

Pence said the recommendations made by the re-launched National Space Council were unanimously approved. The plan, said Pence, will “provide for the common defense of the United States,” and “spur innovation…and see jobs created that we couldn’t even imagine will be created today.”

Interestingly, the news that we will once again be putting man on the moon came as a team of astronomers announced that a comet that recently sailed past the earth may have been extraterrestrial in origin.

The cigar shaped asteroid, ‘Oumuamua, was the first interstellar object seen in the solar system after it was discovered by scientists who now plan to scan it in the hopes that they find radio signals coming from the comet itself.

The alien-hunting project will use the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia for its investigation, with the campaign set to begin at 3:00pm ET (8:00pm GMT) on Wednesday.

The telescopes sensitive equipment would would take less than a minute to pick up something as faint as the radio waves from a smartphone, according to the Atlantic.

Milner, the business mogul behind Breakthrough Listen, a $100 million (£75m) search for intelligent extraterrestrial life, received an email about the object last week from one of his chief scientists.

Amazingly, one of the chief scientists for “Breakthrough Listen” noted that the more he studied the object the more he came to believe that it might be artificially created.

‘The more I study this object, the more unusual it appears, making me wonder whether it might be an artificially made probe which was sent by an alien civilisation,’ Professor Avi Loeb, the chair of Harvard’s astronomy department and one of Milner’s advisers on Breakthrough Listen, wrote in the email.

Professor Loeb said the space rock’s peculiar elongated shape is odd for a common space rock but ideal for a ship flying between star systems.

While we obviously do not have proof that there is a connection here, it does make one wonder, especially when you consider that Trump’s decision was a complete reversal from former President Obama’s with the decision seemingly coming out of no where.

Regardless, I think it is safe to say that the country as a whole is much better off having NASA send Americans into space rather than using private companies who are trying to make money while at the same time attempt to explore space.

There simply is no reason that NASA should not be sending astronauts to the moon.

Conspiracy Theorist Claims NASA Is Lying About The Moon’s Distance From Earth

The supermoon this weekend was a sight to behold for those who were able to witness it.  The December 3 full moon reached its point of perigee, a distance of around 224,000 miles from Earth. But that put some on edge, and many believe NASA is lying about the moon.

A bizarre video uploaded to YouTube by user RitchieFromBoston, claims to contain evidence that the Moon is much closer to Earth than NASA claims.  The video claims that the moon is actually less than 4.7 miles away from Earth. The conspiracy video kicks off with Ritchie peddling theories about chemtrail sprays before shifting his attention to the Moon.  “They’re lying to us. Do not believe NASA because they are lying about our entire origin,” he said.

Claiming to use a Nikon P900 digital camera, he zooms in all the way on the Moon, exposing every bump and crater on its surface.  “See this video that I’m taking right now? I am clearly in the daytime and am zooming in on the Moon. Let’s watch this again. In the daylight, I am zooming right in on the Moon – no problem with a Nikon P900. And I can zoom in even further than that, and I believe I will. There it is. You can literally see what looks to be stars shining right through it,” he said.

Ritchie then promptly cuts to a view of the Boston skyline across from what appears to be Charles River. Further demonstrating his “evidence” he uses the same camera to zoom in on the Prudential Tower in Back Bay, which he claims is only 4.7 miles away from his home.  “Here we go, here we go, here we go. Prudential building,” he says.

“You can almost read it cause it says Prudential right there. And there you go.  My camera is totally maxed out. I apologize for the shakiness but when you’re zoomed out 2,000mm, the camera is shaky. Now let’s watch me zoom in on the Moon which is 200-plus thousand miles away, and I’m trying to film the Moon through an incredibly heavy atmosphere which they’re spraying in front of my eyes.”

Dr. Greg Brown at the Royal Observatory Greenwich explained: “Our Moon travels the Earth on an orbit that takes 27.3 days to complete. That orbit isn’t perfectly circular – it’s slightly elliptical. “And that means that at certain times during the orbit, the moon is slightly closer to the Earth than at other times. A full moon or a new moon which occurs during the closest point in this orbit is known as a supermoon.”

Others who disagree say that Ritchie is failing to take into account the size of the moon in comparison to that of the Prudential Tower.

Asteroid Will Skim By Earth Days Before Christmas: It Is ‘Potentially Hazardous’

An asteroid called 3200 Phaethon will skim past the Earth just days before many will celebrate with Christmas festivities. The three-mile-wide asteroid is expected to miss the Earth, but it’s still labeled as “potentially hazardous,” and for good reasons.

With a diameter of about 3 miles, the asteroid named 3200 Phaethon (after the Greek demi-god who, according to legend, nearly set the Earth on fire) is classified as “potentially hazardous” by the Minor Planet Center. The asteroid will pass within 6.5 million miles of the Earth, which is relatively close in space terms, but still around 27 times the distance of the moon. Much closer flybys have occurred in the very recent past.

Scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory are planning to use the opportunity to obtain a detailed 3D model of the asteroid, which has a particularly irregular shape. First detected in December 2007, 3200 Phaethon is widely thought to be the parent body for the Geminid meteor shower, which is due to peak this year on the night of December 13. This would make the Geminids one of only two major meteor showers not originating from a comet; the other being the Quadrantids in January.

The main difference between asteroids and comets is their composition. Asteroids are made up of metals and rocky material, while comets are made up of ice, dust and rocky material. Comets which approach the Sun lose material with each orbit because some of their ice melts and vaporizes to form a tail.

But the real question is will anyone be able to see the asteroid’s close approach to our planet. According to NASA, 3200 Phaethon will be visible in small telescopes for experienced observers in areas with dark skies. It is potentially detectable for three weeks but will be at its brightest between December 11 and 21. If you don’t see the asteroid itself, be sure to look out for the Geminid meteor shower, which is set to provide a spectacular show over the course of 10 nights in December, with as many as 100 shooting stars every hour.

Discovery Of Cave On Moon Raises Hope For Lunar Human Habitation

Japan’s space agency said it has discovered an enormous cave beneath the lunar surface that could be turned into an exploration base for astronauts.  It appears to be the perfect spot for humans to colonize the moon.

The discovery, made by Japan’s Selenological and Engineering Explorer (Selene) probe, comes as several countries compete to follow the United States in sending manned missions to the moon. Using a radar sounder system that can examine underground structures, the orbiter initially found an opening 50 meters wide and 50 meters deep, prompting speculation that there could be a larger hollow. Scientists at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa) confirmed the presence of the cave after examining the hole using radio waves.

According to The Guardian, the chasm appears to be structurally sound and its rocks may contain ice or water deposits that could be turned into fuel, according to data sent back by the orbiter, nicknamed Kaguya after the moon princess in a Japanese fairytale. Jaxa believes that the cave, located from a few dozen meters to 200 meters beneath an area of volcanic domes known as the Marius Hills on the moon’s near side, is a lava tube created during volcanic activity about 3.5 billion years ago.

The agency said the chamber could be used as a base for astronauts and their equipment because it would protect them from extreme temperatures. Lunar temperatures range from an average of 107 Celcius during the day to -153 Celcius at night, and radiation from the sun’s ultraviolet rays it extremely dangerous.

“We’ve known about these locations that were thought to be lava tubes … but their existence has not been confirmed until now,” said Junichi Haruyama, a senior researcher at Jaxa. Lava tubes “might be the best candidate sites for future lunar bases, because of their stable thermal conditions and potential to protect people and instruments from micrometeorites and cosmic ray radiation,” Haruyama said. “The same stable and protected environment that would benefit future human explorers also makes them an enticing target for scientific study. Careful examination of their interiors could provide unique insights concerning the evolutionary history of the moon.”

“We haven’t actually seen the inside of the cave itself so there are high hopes that exploring it will offer more details,” Haruyama said. China, Russia, India, and the United States have made successful unmanned moon landings, but the US is the only country to have put humans on the lunar surface.  But that could all change in the very near future, as nations look to build colonies for people on the moon.

Theorists Say Asteroid TC4 2012’s Skimming of Earth Signals The Apocalypse

On Thursday, Asteroid 2012 TC4 will come close to earth, at 1/8 the distance of the moon. Although it’s close, scientists assure us that it won’t actually strike the Earth, but some theorists disagree.

Recently updated numbers show that the asteroid will come closer than previously thought. It will pass between the Moon and the Earth at a distance of just 4,200 miles from our planet. Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun. The first known asteroid was Ceres, discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi in 1801. There are currently over 600,000 known asteroids in our solar system. Most asteroids are found orbiting in the Asteroid Belt, a series of rings located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. And some Christian conspiracy theorists now believe that the asteroid’s arrival will mark the beginning of the end of the world.

A blog ran by poet Mel Brake says the passing of the asteroid will be a sign in the sky that Mother Mary is to return and the end of the world will begin. The website says that October will mark the 100 year anniversary of “Our Lady of Fatima,” signaling the apocalypse. “Our Lady Of Fatima” was a phenomenon in 1917, which began May and culminated in October with the “dancing of the sun.” It is said that three young Portuguese shepherds were visited by Mother May who provided them with visions of the apocalypse and on October 13, 1917, Our Lady of Fatima fulfilled her promise to the three children that she would give a sign for all the world to see. On that rainy day, the 50,000 – 70,00 people witnessed for about 10 -15 minutes what is called “The Dance of the Sun”. After “dancing” in the sky for many moments, the sun seemingly left its orbit and hurtled toward earth before returning to the heavens. And now a century later, some believe this asteroid is a sign in the sky that will spark the apocalypse.

Brake’s blog points to Revelation 12:1 says that a “sign” will appear in the heavens before a woman comes and provides great anguish to those on Earth – the woman being Mother Mary in this instance.

The Bible passage 12:1-2 reads: “And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of 12 stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth.”

And Brake’s blog post read: “The message is clear have we a choice between light or dark and since 100 years of Mother Mary’s appearance to the three little children of Fatima. –Express UK

Brake doesn’t indicate that the asteroid will actually impact the Earth, but hints that its arrival is the event that will signal in the apocalypse. NASA also says that there is no danger of the world ending and will use the flyby – less than 5,400 miles between London and Los Angeles – to gather valuable data on the asteroid which was discovered in 2012.

Michael Kelley, a program scientists and NASA headquarters lead for the 2012 TC4 observation campaign, said, “Scientists have always appreciated knowing when an asteroid will make a close approach to and safely pass the Earth. This is because they can make preparations to collect data to characterize and learn as much as possible about it. [And] this time we are adding in another layer of effort, using this asteroid flyby to test the worldwide asteroid detection and tracking network, assessing our capability to work together in response to finding a potential real asteroid threat.”

This new revelation from Brake comes just after David Meade, a mathematician, revealed to that Planet X, also known as Niburu, will crash into our planet and spark the end of the world on September 23.

NASA Astronauts Respond To Plan To ‘Prove Earth Is Flat’

If you’ve spent any time on the internet in the past few years, you would know that there is a growing movement of human beings who firmly believe that the Earth is flat. One of those humans, rapper B.o.B, made headlines last week when he created a GoFundMe page to finance his project which he believes will prove the Earth is flat, but astronauts have already responded.

When the astronauts caught wind of rapper B.o.B’s plan they responded to his asinine idea brilliantly. B.o.B’s idea was to “send a satellite as far into space as possible” to take a photo of the Earth, which he believes will look like a map.

Since B.o.B is obviously not a scientist and has a very limited understanding of mathematics, astronauts took some time out of their day to try to save the young man some money.

Buzz Aldrin, one of the first two men to land on the moon, and the second man to actually walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission, then jumped in to derail the hopes of flat-earthers everywhere.

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly also had advice for B.o.B, as well as video evidence that the Earth is round. If he takes the 35 seconds required to watch it, he’ll see just how round the world is, and save his GoFundMe donors the $200,000 he’s asking for.

But B.o.B wasn’t deterred with actual evidence and the eyewitness accounts of men who have actually been in Earth’s orbit.

No amount of evidence will convince those who have already made up their mind what they “feel” is true. No amount of factual data and mathematical analysis will be enough evidence to get people to drop deeply held but wrong beliefs, making the flat-earther, akin to religious cultists.

United States And Russia To Build NASA-Led Space Station

The liberal science community has a moral dilemma on its hands following today’s announcement that the United States is partnering with Russia on a NASA-led project to build an orbiting lunar station.

On one hand, the international base for lunar exploration will serve as a “gateway to deep space and the lunar surface,” according to NASA.

On the other hand, Russia is involved – which means they’ll undoubtedly slit our throats in space, populate the surface of the moon, build a moon cannon – having read Heinlein, and fire silicon, magnesium, and aluminum-rich moon rocks at the United States. Once we are obliterated, Russia will invade the country and enslave all surviving Americans in moon-rock crushing factories.

Pretending not to be evil, Igor Komarov - Roscosmos’s general director, stated that Russia, the United States and other participants agreed it was important to work using unified standards to avoid future problems in space, citing Sandra Bullock’s movie “Gravity” in the process.

“Roscosmos and NASA have already agreed on standards for a docking unit of the future station,” the Russian space agency said.

AFP reports:

“Taking into account the country’s extensive experience in developing docking units, the station’s future elements — as well as standards for life-support systems — will be created using Russian designs.”

NASA said it planned to expand human presence into the solar system using its new deep space exploration transportation systems, the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft.

– ‘Better to fly together’ –

Russia and the United States also discussed using Moscow’s Proton-M and Angara rockets as well as other spacecraft to help create the infrastructure of the lunar spaceport, the Russian statement said, adding that the main works were slated to begin in the mid-2020s.

“The station will be a serious platform for future research,” said Komarov - concealing his seething Red ambition, though boasting “That is a rather significant contribution.”

Igor Lisov, editor at Space News, told AFP of Russia’s potential contribution: “We are offering carriers for flights to a lunar orbiting station, we are offering our docking units or their components,” he said, adding Russia had vast experience in creating life-support systems.

Russia And The US Work Together To Build A Space Station In The Lunar Orbit

 Maybe all is finally forgiven in the ongoing battle to constantly turn the narrative back to the Russian election meddling, as the former Soviet Union and the United States attempt to work together to build a manned space station which orbits the moon.

Part of this long-term project to send humans to Mars, the NASA-led program will see the two countries working together to create a crewed spaceport in lunar orbit. The proposed crew-tended spaceport will orbit the moon and serve as a “gateway to deep space and the lunar surface.”

Russian and the US have agreed to put their heads together to make the new mission possible. The US space agency said earlier this year that it was exploring a program called the Deep Space Gateway, a multi-stage project to push further into the solar system.

While George W. Bush wanted to see humans on the moon again by 2020, Barack Obama scrapped that plan and focused his intention on plans to visit Mars, including a mission to test the necessary technology by capturing a boulder from the surface of an asteroid and bringing it into lunar orbit. Now with the Donald Trump at the helm, asteroid missions are no longer a top priority. The Trump administration wants to see a spaceport orbiting the moon, crewed visits to the lunar surface are once again on the menu.

Plans to return to the moon have waxed and waned depending on the US administration. NASA, however, has even bigger plans. The organization has ambitious intentions to send humans to orbit Mars by the 2030s, and subsequent plans to colonize the red planet.

On Wednesday the Russian space agency Roscosmos announced that a cooperation agreement had been signed at an astronautical congress in Adelaide.“The partners intend to develop international technical standards which will be used later, in particular to create a space station in lunar orbit,” the Russian agency said in a statement. The Russians and Americans would cooperate to build the systems needed to organise scientific missions in lunar orbit and to the surface of the moon, the agency added. “Roscosmos and Nasa have already agreed on standards for a docking unit of the future station. Taking into account the country’s extensive experience in developing docking units, the station’s future elements will be created using Russian designs.” –The Guardian

“To avoid future problems over technical cooperation, part of the standards should be unified – for a possibility for various countries to work on their craft and dock to the international lunar station,” Igor Komarov, Roscosmos’ general director was quoted as saying in the statement.

Is The Eclipse Nothing More Than A Money-Making Scheme For The Elites?

There are many conspiracies surrounding the total solar eclipse that will occur on Monday, August 21.  Everyone, including scientists, talk like this is a sure thing, but is it?

Some conspiracy theorists are asking us all to follow the money. And they make a few good points.  On August 21, the moon will pass between the Earth and the sun, obscuring the light of our star. The government agency NASA says this will result in “one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights.”  But some say that it’s all just a gigantic conspiracy to make money.

The Atlantic says “something doesn’t add up.” The astronomers at NASA claim to have calculated down to the minute exactly when and where this will happen, and for how long, and have put out maps detailing the “path of totality.” They have reportedly known about this eclipse for years, just by virtue of some sort of complex math. But they haven’t released the math to the public so we can check the calculations for ourselves.

Meanwhile, the scientists tell us we can’t look at it without special glasses because “looking directly at the sun is unsafe.” Of course, it’s unsafe, we’ve known about this for decades.  You shouldn’t look directly at the sun, and there are documented cases of retinal damage because of it.  But what if they only say this during an eclipse (when the moon is blocking the majority of the sun’s rays) to capitalize on the sale of special glasses?

Corporations like Amazon are profiting from the sale of these eclipse glasses. Is anyone asking how many of these astronomers also, conveniently, belong to Amazon Prime?

Let’s follow the money a little further. Hotels along the “path of totality”—a regiondrawn up by Obama-era NASA scientists—have been sold out for months. The entire political-scientific-corporate power structure is aligned behind the eclipse. This includes the mainstream media. There are almost no stories about how the eclipse may not happen.  But could that be because it really is going to happen?  Perhaps we should delve a little deeper into the money trail.

Newspaper owner Jeff Bezos is out there buying all of Seattle with the revenue from these “eclipse glasses.”  Conspiracy theorists are saying that there is a chance the eclipse won’t happen at all and are asking for their voices to be heard.  But if it does happen after a scientist says that it will not, his credibility and trustworthiness for the rest of his life will be questioned.

It isn’t likely that the eclipse won’t happen.  But if it doesn’t, we will have a few validated conspiracy theorists out there all too happy to point out that they were right.

Moon Express: Lunar Outpost to Be Built by 2020 for Space Mining Operations

(ANTIMEDIA)  — Science fiction fans, take note. A private company, Moon Express, has just revealed its grand vision to launch the early stages of a mining operation on the lunar surface. From Ars Technica on Wednesday:

“The privately held company released plans for a single, modular spacecraft that can be combined to form successfully larger and more capable vehicles. Ultimately the company plans to establish a lunar outpost in 2020 and set up commercial operations on the Moon.”

Moon Express representatives unveiled the plans Wednesday at a hearing before Congress’ Science, Space and Technology Committee. The company got approval from the United States government to launch its first craft, the MX-1E, in August of last year.

The system is modular in that it’s based on individual pods, robots called MX-1s that remarkably resemble R2-D2. The pods, each one powered by Moon Express’ own PECO engine, can be fitted together to form a single craft that can fly as one and then separate when it reaches its target destination.

The individual MX-1s would use thrusters — again, sort of like R2-D2 — to move about the lunar surface collecting rocks. When its compartments are full, the pod would launch and head back to Earth.

The collected samples, which Moon Express hopes to have in its possession following its third mission launch in 2020, would be available to the private sector. As company co-founder Bob Richards told Ars Technica, “We absolutely intend to make these samples available globally for scientific research, and make them available to collectors as well.”

This would be after the company establishes a lunar outpost on the moon’s southern pole, where sunlight is constant. The stated purpose of this phase of the mission is to “prospect for water and useful minerals, and accommodate a variety of research instruments for our expedition partners.”

The plans fit comfortably within Moon Express’ overall goal to “open the lunar frontier for all of us, ultimately expanding Earth’s economic and social spheres to our 8th continent, the Moon,” as the company writes on its site.

A problem Moon Express will have to overcome first, however, is the “E” in MX-1E. The Electron rocket, intended to power these craft out of Earth’s atmosphere, which is also being developed by another private company, Rocket Lab, has thus far failed to deliver its payload into orbit.

(INTELLIHUB) — The biggest and brightest moon ever seen since 1948 will occur Monday at 6:23 EST, coming some 216,000 miles from Earth.

Reports say that the moon’s orbit is “egg-shaped” and that’s why it will appear it’s biggest Monday morning, until the next time the phenomenon will happen in 2034.
