Orange Snow Blankets Parts Of Russian And Eastern Europe

Skiers in Sochi, Russia were met with a strange sight this past weekend. The usually beautiful and powdery white snow of Eastern Europe and Russia turned an interesting shade of sunset orange.

“We’re skiing on Mars today,” exclaimed one excited social media user as he skied down the orange tinted slopes. Skiers and snowboarders in Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Romania posted photos of the surreal scenes on social media on both Friday and Saturday. People skiing and living in the region complained of sand in their mouths, the BBC reported.

The red dust in the snow, however, caused limited visibility for people as they tried to make their way down the slopes in Sochi, but the orange snow has been explained.

A sandstorm in Africa kicked up so much orange and red dust that it made its way to Russia and parts of Eastern Europe. The sandstorm was so massive that it could be seen by satellite. Then, as the sandstorm was underway, storms in northern Africa picked up sand, dust, and pollen particles from the Sahara and blew them across the Mediterranean and Europe, The Independent reported. It then mixed with snow and rain in eastern Europe and Russia, turning the snow orange.

According to CCN, The Athens Observatory said on Friday that this is one of the largest transfers of desert sand to Greece specifically from the Sahara ever and the strange meteorological event also caused the skies in Crete to go orange.

The African dust covered the entire country and concentrations were the highest in the last 10 years, according to the observatory’s meteorological service.

The snow’s orange tint was both an interesting and strange sight to many.  This is just one example of how powerful the Earth and its everchanging weather can be.

Solar Storm Will Strike Earth Tonight, ‘Weak Power Grid Fluctuations’ Possible

emfsolarstorm

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts an aurora could light up the sky above areas in the United State including Michigan and Maine.  A solar storm, which occurred Monday, is expected to strike Earth tonight.

On Monday, the sun spit out a slew of charged particles in a moderate solar flare. These particles are now making their way towards Earth. The planet’s magnetic field will block most of the particles, but some will make it into Earth’s atmosphere. The particles collect at the north and south poles and interact with atmospheric gases to create the aurora borealis or the Northern Lights. And some say this show could be quite spectacular.

Solar flares have been known to cause power grid failures, but it looks like we’ll only get the light show this time. Although a grid failure is possible, it is unlikely.

According to Seeker, the forecast calls for a high probability of a G-1 or “minor” storm, which could strengthen to a G-2 or “moderate” storm depending on how the stream of particles hit the Earth. Geomagnetic storms are ranked on a scale, with G at the bottom, R in the middle, and S as the most severe. Forecasts now say the particles will give our planet a glancing blow.

Although this storm has been categorized as “G-1,” which means it is minor, it could still cause some havoc down on Earth. Solar flares and particle ejections are associated with sunspots — dark areas on the sun’s surface — that host intense magnetic activity. As the magnetic fields in a sunspot cross, NASA stated, this can cause a sudden energy explosion, also known as a solar flare. This sends radiation out into space, and that radiation can be hurled toward the Earth.

G1-level storms, such as Monday’s, may affect migratory animals, and can cause “weak power grid fluctuations.” The barrage of particles may even have a minor impact on satellites.  A gird failure would almost immediately fling the United States into a state of panic, and it’s always good to be prepared just in case. But it doesn’t look like there will be any serious damage to the power grid because of this storm as of right now.

NASA Astronauts Respond To Plan To ‘Prove Earth Is Flat’

buzzaldrin

If you’ve spent any time on the internet in the past few years, you would know that there is a growing movement of human beings who firmly believe that the Earth is flat. One of those humans, rapper B.o.B, made headlines last week when he created a GoFundMe page to finance his project which he believes will prove the Earth is flat, but astronauts have already responded.

When the astronauts caught wind of rapper B.o.B’s plan they responded to his asinine idea brilliantly. B.o.B’s idea was to “send a satellite as far into space as possible” to take a photo of the Earth, which he believes will look like a map.

Since B.o.B is obviously not a scientist and has a very limited understanding of mathematics, astronauts took some time out of their day to try to save the young man some money.

Buzz Aldrin, one of the first two men to land on the moon, and the second man to actually walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission, then jumped in to derail the hopes of flat-earthers everywhere.

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly also had advice for B.o.B, as well as video evidence that the Earth is round. If he takes the 35 seconds required to watch it, he’ll see just how round the world is, and save his GoFundMe donors the $200,000 he’s asking for.

But B.o.B wasn’t deterred with actual evidence and the eyewitness accounts of men who have actually been in Earth’s orbit.

No amount of evidence will convince those who have already made up their mind what they “feel” is true. No amount of factual data and mathematical analysis will be enough evidence to get people to drop deeply held but wrong beliefs, making the flat-earther, akin to religious cultists.

Space warning: Satellite is spiraling out of control above Earth

A satellite is spiraling out of control and could head towards Earth, its operator has confirmed

Spacecraft construction company SES says it lost control of its satellite on June 17 and is now struggling locate it.

SES’s AMC-9 satellite, which was 36,000 kilometres above the Earth’s surface, began spiralling out of control following a “significant anomaly”.

The company, which bills itself as a provider of “reliable and secure satellite and ground communications solutions”, said the satellite began breaking apart in the last few days.

Russian Satellite Will Launch In Two Weeks, Will Be The Brightest Star In Sky

Authored by Mac Slavo via SHTFplan.com,

Mayak, a Russian satellite that will become one of the brightest stars in the night sky, is just two weeks away from launching into space.  Their goal is to make the unique satellite bright with the use of a giant reflective sheet of material, but some scientists are warning that there may be negative consequences.

The satellite is small, roughly the size of a loaf of bread and in the form of a CubeSat.  It will be launched on a Soyuz 2.1v vehicle on Friday, July 14, from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, as a secondary payload. The project, led by Moscow State Mechanical Engineering University (MAMI), raised more than $30,000 on Russian crowdfunding website Boomstarter.

Once in orbit, about 600 kilometers (370 miles) high, the satellite is designed to unfurl a giant pyramid-shaped solar reflector.

The goal is for this satellite to shine brighter than any other star in the night sky. To do this, its reflector made of Mylar will span 16 square meters (170 square feet) and is apparently 20 times thinner than human hair. The mission is also acting as a technology demonstration, to test how to brake satellites in orbit and de-orbit them.

“Mayak,” which translates to “Beacon” in English is controversial though.

“We want to show that space exploration is something exciting and interesting, but most importantly that today it is accessible to everybody who is interested,” project leader Alexander Shaenko said, reported Sputnik News.  Mayak’s only mission is to be bright and remove defunct satellites from earth’s orbit.

But it runs the risk of a backlash from scientific and environmental groups, depending on how bright it is. Some, like Russia Today, have suggested it may shine as bright as the Moon, although that is questionable.  Nonetheless, if it is excessively bright, it could cause havoc for astronomers who rely on darkness to observe the universe.

“We fight so hard for dark skies in and around our planet,” Nick Howes, an astronomer and former deputy director of the Kielder Observatory in Northumberland, told IFLScience.

“To see this being potentially ruined by some ridiculous crowdfunded nonsense makes my heart simply despair.”

Skeptics won’t keep the satellite from launching though. Russia will put Mayak in space in about two weeks, on July 14.  We’ll have to wait to see just how bright it is and if it’s bright enough to warrant complaints from scientists.

North Korea’s Satellites May ALREADY Have EMP Weapon, Expert Warns; ‘We’re Blind And Defenseless’; ‘90 Percent Of Population’ Would Die

North Korea

It’s possible North Korea already has deployed an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapon capable of killing 90 percent of the population, and it’s passing over the United States each day.

That’s what Peter Vincent Pry, the chief of staff for the Congressional EMP Commission, believes. Pry told Off The Grid Radio that North Korea has two satellites circling the globe that the U.S. knows little about.

“The threat we’re most concerned about is a nuclear EMP attack, and North Korea might well be able to do that right now,” Pry said.

An EMP weapon is a low-yield nuclear bomb that generates electromagnetic energy that would fry all electronics – including the power grid.

North Korea’s two satellites are called Kwangmyŏngsŏng (KMS)-3 and KMS-4.

“You almost never hear about this in the press,” Pry told  Off The Grid Radio. “(KMS-3) is still up there, and it passes over the United States in a South-polar trajectory. South-polar trajectories are significant because we don’t have any ballistic missile early-warning radars facing South. We don’t have any interceptors facing South. We’re blind and defenseless.”

He added that KMS-3 is “at the optimum altitude for putting an EMP field down over all 48 contiguous United States.”

America’s defenses are set up to stop Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMS) fired over the North Pole, but not a satellite on a trajectory like KMS-3, Pry said.

“An electromagnetic pulse, a single weapon, detonated at that altitude would fry electronics, black out the electrical grid completely — not just temporarily but possibly forever,” Pry said.

“We, the Congressional EMP Commission, estimate that if we have a blackout that lasts one year — which an EMP attack could do — we would lose 90 percent of our population to starvation, disease and societal collapse,” Pry warned. “We’re an electronic civilization. We can’t survive without electronics.”

“There’s only enough food in the country for 30 days, and it begins to spoil in three days because the emergency generators in the big regional fuel warehouses only have enough fuel for three days,” Pry said. “So, in three days the food supply will start spoiling.”

Nuclear Plants a Concern, Too

Starvation would be just one of the horrors of an EMP apocalypse.

“The nuclear reactors — we’ve got 100 of them — would go Fukushima in seven days,” Pry said.

Nuclear reactors are cooled by water moved by electric pumps. If the pumps shut down, the reactors overheat and cause steam explosions.

“In effect, it turns all those nuclear reactors and their cooling ponds into dirty bombs that would spread dangerous levels of radioactivity all over the country,” Pry said.

Additionally, in a long-term blackout gas and oil pipelines would explode and trigger massive firestorms that could engulf entire cities.

“We’re not set up for blackouts that last a week,” Pry said. “And we’re talking in a nuclear EMP attack a blackout that would last at least a year. … If you lose 90 percent of your population you’re never coming back. You can’t recover the grid when nine out of 10 people are dead. That’s what North Korea could do.”

Pry also noted that the strength of North Korea’s first nuclear bomb, tested in 2006, was consistent with the explosive force needed for an EMP superweapon. Such a weapon would only weigh around 100 pounds and could fit in a satellite.
