Scientists Are Developing A Technique To Control The Weather With Laser-Beams

In a breakthrough that could permanently ameliorate the threat of thinning water supplies in California and much of the western US, a team of scientists says it will soon be able to induce rainfall and lightning storms by firing high-energy laser beams into the heavens.


Express reports that the breakthrough involves manipulating the static electricity present in clouds – which, after all, are just balls of condensation, triggering rainfall, according to experts at the University of Central Florida and the University of Arizona.


A six year drought in California was finally declared over this year but the threat for the south-western state as well as other locations in the world remains the same.



But scientists may now be able to induce rain and lightning storms using high energy lasers in a breakthrough that could potentially eradicate droughts throughout the globe.


The possibility of condensation, lightning and storms are ever present in the clouds and are containED through high amounts of static electricity.


Experts from the University of Central Florida and the University of Arizona believe that by firing a series of laser beams, they can activate the static electricity and induce rain and storms.


Here’s how it would work: One beam would be fired into the clouds to stimulate rainfall. Then, a second beam would surround the first beam to help sustain it for longer.





“When a laser beam becomes intense enough, it behaves differently than usual – it collapses inward on itself,” said Matthew Mills, a graduate student in the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL).



“The collapse becomes so intense that electrons in the air’s oxygen and nitrogen are ripped off creating plasma – basically a soup of electrons.”



This struggle is known as “filamentation” and creates a “light string” that only lasts for a short time before it disperses – hence the need for the second beam.


However, “because a filament creates excited electrons in its wake as it moves, it artificially seeds the conditions necessary for rain and lightning to occur.”


And, as it turns out, “if you wrap a large, low intensity, doughnut-like ‘dress’ beam around the filament and slowly move it inward, you can provide this arbitrary extension.





“Since we have control over the length of a filament with our method, one could seed the conditions needed for a rainstorm from afar," Mills continued.



“Ultimately, you could artificially control the rain and lightning over a large expanse with such ideas.”



One of the scientists involved with the study appeared on CBS This Morning on Thursday to explain how the technology would work in more detail:

Thunderstorm Blasts Radiation Everywhere After Turning Into Nuclear Reactor

When a thunderstorm rolled over the Japanese beach town of Uchinada early one December morning in 2015, residents had no idea what they were in for. Sometime after 5 am, a flash of lightning struck a wind turbine and incredible weather phenomena occurred.


While scientists expected the storm, they did not expect the perplexing outcome. The thunderstorm turned into a particle accelerator and blasted gamma radiation at the ground.


Scientists have observed so-called “terrestrial gamma-ray flashes” shooting upwards from the Earth into satellites since the early 1990s. But the 2015 flash was different because not only did it shoot down into the ground instead of up into space, but it confirmed a long-standing suspicion about these flashes by sending a barrage of neutrons into particle detectors a thousand feet away. According to the paper published in Geophysical Research Letters, this is groundbreaking. But that isn’t all.


The flash was massive. “The total fluence of gamma-rays at the ground was calculated to be approximately ~100,000 photons/cm2, much larger than the total combined fluence of all TGFs observed by satellites since 1994,” according to the paper. “This is one of the brightest gamma-ray flashes ever seen on the ground,” Dwyer said.



A team in the United States and Japan led by then-graduate student Gregory Bowers observed these gamma-ray flashes with special particle detectors. Satellites have observed gamma-ray flashes before, but this latest flash was unusual in several aspects, and it came with a prize: They observed a burst of subatomic particles (in this case, neutrons) in their detector. Their observations could shed light on what exactly causes gamma ray flashes and what causes lightning in general, and help researchers get a better handle on how the electric fields inside thunderheads behave. –Gizmodo



“We really don’t understand how thunderstorms make lightning very well,” study author Joseph Dwyer from the University of New Hampshire told Gizmodo. “How it gets started inside the cloud involves how strong the electric fields are. If you get clues to what the electric fields are doing by seeing the gamma rays coming out, that gives you an idea as to what’s going on.”


And as far as “what’s going on,” there are still a few ambiguities scientists are working out. Perhaps the lightning itself is directly responsible for the gamma-ray flashes, or it could be that the electric field inside of the thundercloud begins to accelerate particles, like a particle physics experiment. The interactions in the clouds could have created positrons, a kind of antimatter.  Scientists have documented this happening before. When positrons interact with their regular matter counterpart, (in this case, electrons,) they turn into light particles, called photons, which would show up as gamma rays.


Of course, the neurons also add another layer to this phenomenon. Researchers had predicted that these powerful emissions of neutrons from these flashes occurred, but no one had ever observed them before. They think that high-energy gamma rays interacted with nitrogen in the atmosphere, leading to the production of neutrons. The thunderstorm may literally have become a nuclear reactor, where energy and elements cause reactions in the sky that produce radiation.


This has proven that thunderstorms can turn into natural particle-accelerating nuclear reactors for reasons we don’t quite understand yet, but there’s no need to worry about the radiation.


“You’d probably get more radiation having your tooth x-rayed” than being hit by the neutrons from one of these blasts, said Dwyer. Maybe the dose would be higher for pilots flying around inside the storm, but “this is not my highest concern if I ended up inside a thunderstorm,” he said. “There are a half-dozen ways a thunderstorm can kill you if you’re inside.”

Do 40,000 Lightning Strikes Over SoCal Point To A Mega Quake On The Horizon?

A volatile storm has ignited a slew of 40,000 lightning strike in southwestern California.



The strikes have hit Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties – all between September 10-11.


The electric storm was most active on Sunday with an amazing 5,000 lightning bolts in the area over a three-hour period. NWS Los Angeles took to Twitter to report the tremendous display. The intense storm brought plenty of lightning to the Golden state’s southern region, but almost no rain.  The greatest rain total of .44 inches at Sudden Peak on Sunday. By Monday morning, heavy showers, thunderstorms, and 35-mph winds were reported in eastern Los Angeles County.



But now conspiracy is swirling around this fascinating and unique electric storm.  Strange lights and electrons acting oddly seem to have been appearing either before or during major earthquakes – like the recent 8.2 magnitude quake in Mexico. Could these lightning strikes be a sign that California’s mega quake is on the horizon?



Like California, Mexico is a seismically active region that has seen smaller quakes that have caused death and destruction. But Thursday’s temblor is a reminder that even larger quakes — while rare — do occur. Scientists say it’s possible for Southern California to be hit by a magnitude 8.2 earthquake. Such a quake would be far more destructive to the Los Angeles area because the San Andreas fault runs very close to and underneath densely populated areas.


It’s often stated that California is ripe for a devastating mega earthquake and after some noticed the strange lights in the sky above Mexico during its quake, this conspiracy conclusion was an easy one to jump to.

F-35 Boondoggle Can Only Target “Stationary or Slow Moving Objects”

Even if you’ve never heard of the sunk cost fallacy, you’ve definitely been guilty of it at one time or another. We all have. It’s what happens when you spend money or effort on something that doesn’t pay off. However, instead of cutting your losses, you double down and keep flushing your money down the drain because you’re emotionally attached to the project or investment. It’s clearly a waste of money, but because you’ve already spent so much, it feels like it would be a waste to just stop and let it go.


If you’ve ever bought a run down used car, and spent far more in repairs than the original cost of the vehicle, then you know what I’m talking about. We’re all guilty of this, but the sunk cost fallacy becomes especially problematic and wasteful when governments are guilty of it. Then the waste is no longer measured in thousands of dollars.


Though our government has produced plenty of examples of the sunk cost fallacy (the drug war, war on terror, war on poverty, etc), perhaps the most perfect example is the F-35 project. This is a fighter jet that has cost over a trillion dollars to develop since 2001. It was significantly delayed and was completed well over budget. And yet, the aircraft has been mired in technical problems every step of the way.


For instance, software bugs have prevented the F-35 from taking off during test flights. A glitch has caused the the radar to turn off randomly, forcing pilots to turn it off and on again. There’s also a problem with the ejection seat, which could kill lightweight pilots when it’s used. Plus there are problems with the fuel tank, lightning protection, the helmet display, and the flight control system, among others.


But because we’ve already sunk so much money into the F-35, nobody has the guts to say enough is enough.


And if you can believe it, there are still new problems emerging with this aircraft, the latest of which involves the aircraft’s laser targeting system.



‘Despite being among the most technologically advanced low-observable warplanes on the planet, the Lockheed Martin F-35 has one significant shortcoming,’ it wrote.


‘The Joint Strike Fighter cannot strike moving ground targets using the targeting system and weapons loadout delivered in its final combat Lightning II configuration, Block 3F.’


The jet has gone through dozens of updates to its software, with the Block 3F being the most recent.


The issue means the aircraft is limited to striking fixed or slow-moving objects such as surface-to-air missiles.



Every time there is a problem with this aircraft, it presents our government with an opportunity to cut its losses and scrap the whole project. But when you’ve spent enough money to bribe god, giving up feels like such a waste. Even if it’s the smart thing to do.
