Fault Line Wakes Up: New Zealand Could Be DESTROYED By Massive 9.0 Earthquake

hikurangi-subduction-zone

A 2016 earthquake has awoken a fault line that was thought to be dormant. Now that it’s becoming active, fears have arisen that New Zealand could be destroyed by a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake.

The devastating Kaikura earthquake in 2016 has resurrected the Hikurangi subduction zone where two tectonic plates clash and one is pushed down. Geologists are now warning that this trench could cause a massive earthquake on the ocean floor, and could trigger other 9.0 magnitude earthquakes and tsunamis that will reach the western coast of the islands in just seven minutes.

The Australian plate is heading north while the Pacific plate is heading west, and the combination of these motions means that the Pacific plate, which includes much of the South Island, is moving relative to the Australian plate at a rate of about 40millimeterss each year in a southwesterly direction.

Ursula Cochran, from the science firm GNS, told The Marlborough Express: “We need to think Japan 2011 basically, because if our whole plate boundary ruptured it would be a magnitude-9 earthquake.” The Great East Japan Earthquake and resulting tsunami smashed through the country’s north-eastern coast killing almost 16,000 people and destroying the lives of thousands more. It also triggered a major ongoing crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

“One of the biggest hazards of that kind of earthquake is the tsunami that is triggered by a fault rupture offshore.,” Cochran added. “We know from tsunami modeling from a hypothetical earthquake from the Hikurangi subduction zone that the travel times could be very short to the coast, so seven minutes for some of the south Wairarapa coast.”

One year after it struck, scientists are also warning that the Kaikoura quake was not the “big one” for the Hikurangi subduction zone. The quake on the Hikurangi subduction zone was devastating. The magnitude 7.8 that destroyed houses, lifted the Kaikoura seabed by 2m, tore apart farmland, and wrecked kilometers of State Highway 1, may be minor compared to what could come, Cochran said.

“One thing about reflecting on from the Kaikoura earthquake is we don’t want people to think this is the big one.” An international team hopes to drill boreholes into the subduction zone and place monitoring equipment there to act as an early warning system.

No Tsunami Warning Issued After Major Earthquake Off Japan’s Coast

tsunami

The Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan could have been facing a possible tsunami after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake rolled just off the coast of Japan. This quake is just one more to add to the increasing tectonic activity on earth lately, yet experts do not believe that this one will cause a tsunami.

Just after the massive 7.1 earthquake in Mexico city, several other large quakes occurred around the globe and a volcano erupted. The volcano’s eruption was triggered by the earthquake in Mexico,  but the quake just off the coast of Japan is striking fear into those near the nuclear power plant over a tsunami. The earthquake struck less than 24 hours after a horrific quake rocked Mexico City and left hundreds dead.

According to Fortune, there have not been any reports of damage or tsunami warnings, but the story is still developing. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the seismic event, but so far the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has yet to comment on possible tsunami activity, however, the government agency is currently monitoring Hurricane Maria off the coast of Puerto Rico.

Japan is understandably on edge over undersea earthquakes, after 2011’s 9.0-magnitude event caused massive damage at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Ultimately nearly 20,000 people were killed or went missing during that earthquake, which was the fourth-largest in world since measurements began in 1900. The earthquake, and subsequent tsunami waves (which were up to 130 feet high), caused $220 billion in damage to Japan. The waves hit the Fukushima Daiichi plant so hard that the nuclear facility began to melt down. The nearby town was ordered to evacuate amidst the fallout, and more than 5,000 aftershocks hit over the next year—including one that measured 7.9 on the Richter Scale. – Fortune

The nuclear power plant suffered radiation as a result of the2011 tsunami sparked by the quake and triggered a 30km evacuation zone. Because the leaks continue to this day, there is now a 20km no-go area which may only be entered under government supervision. This was the most significant nuclear incident since the Chernobyl disaster, in 1986.

The swarm of earthquakes across the globe is raising fears over a super volcano eruption, or an even larger quake that could devastate the entire west coast. Even though there was no tsunami warning issued after this recent earthquake off of Japan’s coast, those in the nation are rightly concerned. But again, experts do believe that this recent earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat.

Silicon Valley Survivalist Builds DIY “Extreme Weather TsunamiBall” To Ride Out Disaster

tsunami1

Whenever seismic activity kicks up on the planet, earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis are triggered.

Just how big, and how devastating, depends upon chance, and the build-up of pressures within the earth.

But anyway you slice it, places like Southern California, and globally, the Ring of Fire, are in the danger zone. Many say that it’s just a matter of time.

With that in mind, survival-minded individuals and disaster preppers have been trying to get ready, and help others get ready, too.

That’s sort of what happened when Chris Robinson and his Silicon Valley friends and associates got into ‘sketching ideas for tsunami-proof shelters.’

He says his boss drove home the idea, and brought it up over and over, until he came up with any idea…

… And started building his own tsunami-proof shelter that he hoped could survive a storm of any size, and keep he and his family safe even if the vessel tumbled, or got knocked.

As a one-man crew, Robinson went to town with simple plywood, and a lot of patience, until he came up with this fantastic DIY survival vessel, dubbed the ‘Tsunamiball’, featured on one of the best off-grid sites on the web.

via Kirsten Dirksen:

A couple years ago Chris Robinson was a former Facebook and PayPal art director with no boat-building (nor sailing) experience. Then the Tsunami hit Japan (a place where he’d lived and met his wife). He happened to be working in a startup incubator at the time with some “very smart people”, including an astronaut, and everyone was sketching ideas for tsunami-proof shelters.

To be sure, Robinson’s house boat isn’t done, and frankly, wouldn’t survive a disaster of any magnitude in its current condition. It hasn’t even been tested on the water.

But he hopes to use his pet project to inspire others into thinking of better designs, and improving his along the way.

As Wired Magazine reported:

The former Facebook and PayPal art director used Adobe Illustrator to sketch his tsunamiball plan (he asked some engineers for help calculating whether it would float). “Very early in the project it became about building this interesting object,” Robinson says. “I’m not a survivalist. I don’t even have life jackets.” He does, however, have an emotional connection to Fukushima—he met his wife there in 1991, when he lived in Japan. “Half the places we went on dates are gone,” he says. Robinson plans to finish the outer shell by May, then ocean-test the vessel if he can find a crane and truck big enough to haul it over to the Pacific. And if the sphere doesn’t sink, he’ll use Airbnb to rent the tsunamiball for tidal wave-safe overnights in Palo Alto.

Whether it helps out in a disaster or not, the project is fascinating and breathtaking.

In principle, it is very similar to the ‘Survival Capsule’ that SHTF reported on a little while back:

In the wake of an extreme threat – such as a tsunami or earthquake – this capsule could be the best place to withstand the impact, no matter what.

It is water-tight. It is extremely durable. It floats, and it can withstand against the impact of super-strong winds, crashes, heat and many other factors.

As the London Guardian reports:

This capsule, which features two small porthole windows so the occupants can see what is going on around them, was created to give individual groups and families more control of their survival in emergency situation than traditional ‘safe houses.’

It is designed to float so it will never be inundated by water levels rising too high, as they do in tsunami situations.

[…]

The sphere is designed to withstand the initial impact of a natural disaster, as well as sharp object penetration, heat exposure, blunt object impact, and rapid deceleration.

How’s your plan for survival? It’s time to think one through if you don’t have one.

Scientists Warn That The Coming California Megaquake Could Plunge Large Portions Of The State Into The Ocean

Authored by Michael Snyder via The End of The American Dream blog,

Over the years, many people have been shown that someday a giant earthquake will cause significant portions of California to fall into the ocean. But up until now, most scientists have disputed the idea that this could ever actually happen. Well, now all of that has changed. According to a brand new study, a megaquake along the west coast “could plunge large parts of California into the sea almost instantly”. In fact, the researchers that conducted this study say that it is almost certain to happen eventually. Of course they probably don’t believe that such an event is imminent or else they would be moving out of the state like so many other people are.

When I came across news stories about this brand new study I was absolutely astounded. Here is a short excerpt from one of them…

The Big One may be overdue to hit California, but scientists near LA have found a new risk for the area during a major earthquake.

They claim that if a major tremor hits the area, it could plunge large parts of California into the sea almost instantly.

The discovery was made after studying the Newport-Inglewood fault, which has long been believed to be one of Southern California’s danger zones.

Could you imagine what such a catastrophe would do to our nation and how many lives would be lost if that were to happen today?

According to the study, a California megaquake would potentially cause some sections of southern California to suddenly drop by as much as 3 feet, and that could result in vast stretches of land “ending up at or below sea level”…

In total three quakes over the last 2,000 years on nearby faults made ground just outside Los Angeles city limits sink as much as 3ft.

Today that could result in the area ending up at or below sea level, said Cal State Fullerton professor Matt Kirby, who worked with the paper´s lead author, graduate student Robert Leeper.

Wow.

And we are not talking about something that would happen over a period of weeks or months. According to these scientists, it would be a “very rapid sinking”…

“It’s not just a gradual sinking. This is boom — it would drop. It’s very rapid sinking,” Robert Leeper, lead author of a new study published in Nature, carried out with the help of the US Geological Survey, told the LA Times.

So could a substantial portion of southern California someday actually slide into the ocean like we see in the movies?

The scientists that were involved in this study say that the answer is yes…

Cal State Fullerton professor Matt Kirby, who worked with the Leeper on the study, said the sinking would occur quickly and likely result in part of California being covered by the sea.

“It’s something that would happen relatively instantaneously,” Prof Kirby said. “Probably today if it happened, you would see seawater rushing in.”

Let us hope that we have as much time as possible before anything like this actually happens. But scientists are also telling us that a tremendous amount of seismic tension has built up in southern California, and that this tension could cause a major earthquake at any time. In fact, in my recent article about why people are moving out of California, I included a quote from an ABC Los Angeles story about how researchers are warning that a major earthquake in southern California is “way overdue”…

A recently published study reveals new evidence that a major earthquake is way overdue on a 100 mile stretch of the San Andreas Fault from the Antelope Valley to the Tejon Pass and beyond.

Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey released the results of the years-long study warning a major earthquake could strike soon.

Today, more than 38 million people live in the state of California, and as a population density map of the state shows, much of the population is concentrated along the coastline…

So if large sections of the California coast did end up plunging into the ocean, what would the death toll be?

Would it be in the millions?

And what would such a disaster mean for the rest of the country?

The west coast of the United States sits along “the Ring of Fire”. Roughly encircling the Pacific Ocean, this vast seismic zone contains approximately 75 percent of the active volcanoes in the world and it produces more than 80 percent of all major earthquakes.

In other words, anyone that lives near the Ring of Fire would be foolish to assume that they are immune from massive natural disasters.

In 2011, a major earthquake along the Ring of Fire on the other side of the Pacific Ocean caused a massive tsunami to wash inland in Japan for many, many miles.

If such a thing were to happen in Los Angeles or San Francisco, the death and destruction would be on a scale that would be absolutely unimaginable.

When the big Hollywood film entitled “San Andreas” came out in 2015, a lot of people mocked the idea that the things portrayed in that film could ever happen in real life.

But now scientists are telling us that a megaquake could cause large portions of California to plunge into the ocean and that it is quite likely that this will actually happen someday.

Ancient Quakes Reveal Risk For California: “L.A. Will Sink As Much As 3 Feet”

screen-shot-2017-03-22-at-3-08-35-pm

The earth has a history of violent uprisings, and a furious seismic temper.

Better understanding of the patterns revealed in rocks and other records make clear that places like Los Angeles are sitting in a hotbed with a history of destruction, turmoil and earth-shattering upheavals.

The Big One is just a matter of time. It is inevitable.

People had better take heed, and get as prepared as they’re going to get. The only guarantee of relative safety is to move away from the path of destruction – which records now indicate takes place time and again in the same earthquake-prone regions.

But it would also be prudent to check your stocks and supplies, and keep, at a minimum, a three-day bug out bag and emergency road kit in your vehicle, and maintain full fuel tanks. This is one scenario that may well play out.

via Reuters:

The Big One may be overdue to hit California but scientists near Los Angeles have found a new risk for the area during a major earthquake: abrupt sinking of land, potentially below sea level.

The last known major quake on the San Andreas fault occurred in 1857, but three quakes over the last 2,000 years on nearby faults made ground just outside Los Angeles city limits sink as much as three feet…

Scientists from California State University Fullerton and the United States Geological Survey found evidence the older quakes caused part of the coastline south of Long Beach to drop by one-and-a-half to three feet.

[…]

“It’s something that would happen relatively instantaneously,” Kirby said. “Probably today if it happened, you would see seawater rushing in.”

Already we see homes in California falling over a cliff, as the earth crumbles beneath them. The risks are known, but rapidly becoming so much more evident.

A population of 10 million or more is at risk, with thousands of people in danger of dying. Most of the deadly risk comes from falling objects inside of failing structures, however, not direct effects of the earthquake or rumbling.

Whether it is an earthquake, tsunami, volcano, geiser, tornado or flood, roads can be cut off, shut down or become impassible. Have at least two back up routes in case of the need to evacuate; and remain familiar with all the back road routes you plan to traverse.

The San Andreas fault line is just one of the most apparent eventualities we face. FEMA and Homeland Security have prepped for the big one. Have you?

“They Are Erupting”: Alaskan Volcano Throws Ash 35,000 Feet Interrupting Commercial Flights

screen-shot-2017-03-09-at-3-21-24-am

Volcanic eruption in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands as seen from ISS.

Is a major seismic event headed our way?

There is no way to know for sure, but science warns that hotspots like the San Andreas fault in Southern California are “overdue” for the big one, which frequently occurs every hundred years or so. If the earth doesn’t release enough steam from time to time, larger pressures can build up, creating event more catastrophic disasters.

A volcano in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands has been erupting quite a bit lately – and has now had its biggest eruption so far in recent months, sending volcanic ash hurling some 35,000 feet into the air, high enough to disrupt commercial flights. That was the Bogoslof Volcano.

It was a spectacular, if not unsettling event.

Meanwhile, there was a new lava outbreak that was observed in Hawaii.

It seems clear that things are heating up – they are beginning to erupt.

Though things are not necessarily causally linked, there is often a chain of seismic disruptions that occur during a short span of time, and when things heat up in one part of, say, the Pacific Ring of Fire, things sometime explode elsewhere down the line.

Could the intense three hour eruption at Bogoslof Volcano be a sign of bigger events to come? There is frequent seismic activity in the Aleutian Islands, to be sure, but there is also the sense of something immense building up from inside an angry earth.

via RT:

An Alaskan volcano experienced its largest eruption to date and created a large ash cloud. For the past several months, Bogoslof Volcano has had minor eruptions, but the most recent was its strongest, sending ashes 35,000 feet above sea level.

Residents of the Aleutian Islands are under ash advisory …

The spectacle lasted three hours and was marked by 200 lightning strikes, until it “just shut off,” according to Wallace. While the event did not disrupt air traffic, that may have been sheer luck. Any eruption above 20,000 feet can pose a risk to flights traveling between Asia and the US. In addition, Bogoslof could again erupt at any time.

Are things heating up? Is something massive about to happen?

Stay vigilant, have your preps and escape routes ready, and steady yourself for what may well be trying times ahead.
