These Ex-Spies are Harvesting Facebook Photos for a Massive Facial Recognition Database

These Ex-Spies are Harvesting Facebook Photos for a Massive Facial Recognition Database | facial-recognition | Science & Technology Sleuth Journal Special Interests Surveillance US News

(FORTUNE)  When Mark Zuckerberg appeared before the House Energy and Commerce Committee last week in the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica revelations, he tried to describe the difference between “surveillance and what we do.” “The difference is extremely clear,” a nervous-looking Zuckerberg said. “On Facebook, you have control over your information… the information we collect you can choose to have us not collect.”

But not a single member of the committee pushed the billionaire CEO about surveillance companies who exploit the data on Facebook for profit. Forbes has uncovered one case that might shock them: over the last five years a secretive surveillance company founded by a former Israeli intelligence officer has been quietly building a massive facial recognition database consisting of faces acquired from the giant social network, YouTube and countless other websites. Privacy activists are suitably alarmed.

That database forms the core of a facial recognition service called Face-Int, now owned by Israeli vendor Verint after it snapped up the product’s creator, little-known surveillance company Terrogence, in 2017. Both Verint and Terrogence have long been vendors for the U.S. government, providing bleeding-edge spy tech to the NSA, the U.

DEEP STATE PLOY For Mass Surveillance: Facebook Recognition AI Will Use Your Own Biometrics Against You

facebookprivacy

Sometime this year, Facebook plans to unveil a new facial recognition technology across the site which uses artificial intelligence to scan uploaded photos to analyze and recognize faces based on images previously uploaded to the site. But this is nothing more than a surveillance technique.

According to Natural News, this sneaky surveillance technique will link users to the people they meet in real life all while tracking their whereabouts and social circle even further. And the real kicker? Facebook will roll out this AI deep state mass surveillance under the guise of “protecting your privacy.”

Facebook will roll the controversial plan out all in the name of “protecting your privacy.” Facebook promises to alert users when someone uploads a photo of them to Facebook. This feature supposedly helps users “detect when others might be attempting to use your image as their profile picture.” This feature is just a façade to invade user privacy, as Facebook gets permission to analyze your photos and track your connections and whereabouts. – Natural News

But there is a way to mostly opt out.  By default, users will already be giving Facebook permission to use the facial recognition AI if their tag suggestions setting is currently “on.” In order to opt out, the user must switch the tag suggestions setting to “none.”

But even more horrifying, is the fact that we should have known that this was coming. Two and a half years ago, ARS-Technica said that Facebook will eventually be able to recognize you – even when you are facing away.

Facebook researchers have unveiled new research that allows for faces to be more easily recognized based on other contextual information, such as hair style, clothing, and body shape.

The research, which was published on arXiv.org in January 2015, was presented at a conference in Boston earlier this month and first reported by New Scientist on Monday.

According to the researchers, the system, dubbed Pose Invariant PErson Recognition (PIPER), is accurate 83 percent of the time—far higher than the current state-of-the-art, which primarily requires clear, full frontal photos to work well. –ARS Technica

But even though a user didn’t give permission to have their face analyzed, the picture could theoretically be analyzed anyway because it contains the face of someone who had given Facebook permission to analyze their pixels. There’s no way Facebook can ensure users that their photos won’t be analyzed. In the end, there really will be no consent or privacy with this AI facial recognition rollout.

There is no such thing as privacy when using Facebook; or any social media or chat app.  All the data that’s shared openly by Facebook users (including pictures, connections, interests, comments, likes, and personal information) is readily compiled and analyzed by algorithms to map out and predict who you are, where you go, what you’ll buy, and much more.

Most Facebook users naively share information rather liberally, only to have their life turned over to surveillance systems, marketing algorithms, and artificial intelligence which is capable of analyzing the pixels in your photos, micromanaging your life interests and dislikes, and tracking your every move.

Matrix Glitch: NASA Reveals Distorted Image Of Martian Surface

matrixglitchimagemars

An image released by NASA revealing a strange and distorted landscape on the surface of Mars is being dubbed a “matrix glitch.”  The odd image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows intriguing clean breaks in the planet’s surface deposits.

The new view shows the different effects of fault activity on the Martian surface, giving rise to everything from clean breaks to ‘stretched out’ distortions.  This is likely an indication that the faults formed at different times when the layers were at various stages of hardening.

NASA explains the “glitchy” image in a second photo, using arrows.

glitch2

In a second image offering a closer look at some of the features that look strange, NASA has pointed out where the faults have displaced individual beds. These areas, as noted by the yellow arrow, are where the faults produced a clean break. In other regions, as noted by the green arrow, the layers appear stretched out as they span the fault.

“These observations suggest that some of the faultings occurred while the layered deposits were still soft and could undergo deformation, whereas other faults formed later when the layers must have been solidified and produced a clean break,” NASA explained.

Speckling the surface of one of Mars’ oldest impact basins, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter recently spotted a sprawling expanse of ‘honeycomb’ landforms, with individual cells of up to 6 miles wide.

The origin of these textured features has long remained a mystery, as scientists debate which type of natural process could be responsible, from glacial events to wind erosion. But it is still possible that multiple processes are at play, according to NASA. There is evidence suggesting the honeycombs and the surrounding landscape in Mars northwestern Hellas Planitia may still be undergoing activity today.

According to NASA, “the lack of impact craters suggest that the landscape, along with these features, have been recently reshaped by a process, or number of processes that may even be active today. Scientists have been debating how these honeycombed features are created, theorized from glacial events, lake formation, volcanic activity, and tectonic activity, to wind erosion.”

China’s Plot to Deploy Army Against North Korea Could Start WW3

chinese-tanks

New photos of a recent highway construction in China could be part of a contingency plan to invade North Korea or amass a huge army on their shared border. Experts fear this newly uncovered plot could stoke the fires of World War 3, inevitably involving the United States.

According to The Express UK, communist China has traditionally been North Korea’s closest ally, but Kim Jong-un’s continued nuclear and ballistic missile tests have tested Beijing’s patience on the rising tensions worldwide. These new revelations also come as North Korea was spotted transporting 30 Scud missiles from Hwangju, south of the capital Pyongyang, to Nampo, on the Korea Bay coast opposite China.

New photos have emerged and they reveal that the Communist superpower is building a six-lane highway in its desolately populated northeast on route to North Korea. With most Chinese peasants not able to afford the luxury of a car, the construction of the G1112 Ji’an–Shuangliao Expressway, has led experts to believe it will be used for quick deployment of tanks and troops to its North Korean border. The photos obtained by Daily Star Online show Chinese construction workers digging tunnels through the mountains and massive cranes constructing bridges over rivers.

Chinese workers construct a six lane highway to North Korea’s border.

Scott Snyder, senior fellow for Korea studies and director of the program on US-Korea policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, told Daily Star Online: “China’s Jilin province has even budgeted and paid for improvements in road infrastructure inside some parts of North Korea in recent years in order to improve logistical access to the Rason port inside North Korea.”

Dean Cheng, an Asia security expert at the Heritage Foundation, a think tank in Washington, said Beijing would have a ”vast array” of contingency plans involving military options to seize Kim Jong-un’s nuclear weapons. And just last week, a highly respected security think tank warned that the . In the bombshell report, the Rand Corporation said any conflict between North Korea and South Korea and the US would quickly spiral into World War 3.

If it’s decided upon by a nation to “take out” the North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-Un, American and Chinese troops would then rush across the border in a race to take control of the tyrant’s nuclear weapons and missile facilities colliding in a clash between China and the US, effectively spawning WW3. A whopping 85% of North Korea’s nuclear facilities are believed to be located within 62 miles of the Chinese border.

last month. The communist nation said that Donald Trump had made a “serious miscalculation” over North Korea. Photos uncovered by a North Korean monitoring site suggested . But there were other confusing and conflicting signs that  next week.

It looks like the world is steamrolling its way to a third world war.

‘Decoders’ Offer Dire Warnings About North Korea’s Nuclear Program

nuke-missile1

Experts outside the United States government are using North Korea’s propaganda videos to dissect and decode the rogue regime’s nuclear program. Decoders say that there are clues about the weapons advancement program hidden in their propaganda, and they are sounding the alarm.

A group of analysts at the Middlebury Institute’s Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Monterey, California are closely studying the propaganda photos and videos put out by the North Korean regime. They then apply new tools such as satellite imagery and 3-D mapping to the videos and photos so they can learn more about how the North continues to advance their weapons in the face of sanctions and growing opposition.

The analysists are finding amazingly detailed information about North Korea’s military capabilities and in this video, they walk us through the clues that reveal the capabilities of a North Korean missile. They will also show instances where they’ve found the North Koreans to be faking their weapons success.

The intense voices in North Korea’s videos make them seem legitimate, but the decoders have looked into what they can actually accomplish and what they cannot by simple decoding images used by the regime themselves.

Perhaps the most alarming revelation is that the decoders suggest that it’s likely that North Korea is using highly advanced machines to construct their missile components. This could make getting a powerful nuke more likely than originally thought. They also say that North Korea has a missile that can carry a warhead capable of hitting the mainland United States, “New York, LA.”

But they also point out the failures in the North Korean weapons advancement program and can identify where Kim Jong-Un is in several photos.

Before And After Satellite Images Of Irma’s Destruction In Caribbean

A satellite image of Virgin Gorda before Hurricane Irma hit (left) and after (right)

A satellite image of Virgin Gorda before Hurricane Irma hit (left) and after (right)

These before and after images, taken by the Landsat 8 satellite, show plainly and clearly how destructive Hurricane Iram was to the Caribbean islands in its path.  The satellite had been busy snapping photos as a way to document the damage.

NASA has released a series of satellite imagery showing islands in the Caribbean before and after the major storm.  The photos were taken on August 25 and September 10, 2017, respectively.

The image below is of the island Barbuda both before and after the storm.  Locals and authorities in the Caribbean have said that this storm was so strong, it wiped Barbuda off the map.

barbuda

Around 90% of Barbuda’s buildings are rubble, and a majority of the island is still underwater, making it uninhabitable for the 1800 residents who before Iram ripped through, called the island home.  It didn’t fare as well as Antiqua, which is still green, meaning its tropical vegetation is still mostly in tact.

Aside from the slightly patchy cloud coverage in the post-hurricane images, the main thing you will notice is the different coloring of the land. In the images from late-August, the islands are a lush vibrant green, while the ones after the hurricane are a duller brown. This is because the hurricane’s violent 185 miles per hour (298 kilometer per hour) winds literally stripped the land of much of its tropical vegetation. Additionally, salt spray spat up by the storm can damage the leaves still on the trees. –IFLScience

But that may not be the only major difference.  The color of the ocean water appears to be a little more on the light side. But that’s most likely due to some differences in the sea’s surface. Choppier waters are less smooth on the surface and therefore reflect less light, so they will appear to be darker.

tortola

The image above, of the British Virgin Islands, shows that this section of the Caribbean had also undergone some major damage.  NASA Earth Observatory says that these islands took a battering from the hurricane.  Among the widespread looting and damage caused to property, over 100 prisoners escaped when Hurricane Irma hit the British Virgin Islands.

Many experts say that it will take months, and perhaps even years, to undo the damage done to the Virgin Islands during Hurrican Irma.

Are You Addicted to Sharenting?

Are You Addicted to Sharenting? | smartphone-baby-picture | Parental Rights Science & Technology Special Interests

It is becoming more common for parents to share pictures of their children – sharenting – since they are babies. Many do it innocently but experts warn of future dangers.

The trend is now labeled as “Sharenting” or the out of control desire that parents have to expose their children on social media.

According to the British Collins dictionary, the English term sharenting is “the practice of parents to use social networks to communicate abundant and detailed information about their children.”

Digital reputation is one of the new dilemmas faced by modern societies. It has become a necessity for many parents to presume about their children online.

The practice has been adopted by celebrities in an attempt to cash in as they sell photos of their children to magazines and newspapers. This trends has caught up with normal people who also share photos of their offspring on social networks.

When someone search engines our name they may find photos from 10 years ago that no longer represent us and we would prefer that no one could see.

But, what if it wasn’t you who uploaded that photo or video? And if it was your parents who uploaded a picture of you naked to Instagram when you were 2 years old as you ran on the beach?

What if you feel that some of those innocent photos “haunt you” when someone looks for information about you?

Sharenting is more serious in countries where technology has been available for longer time. In the US, for example, 92% of minors get a digital identity at two years of age.

That reality makes it necessary to ask: Is the privacy of minors today a lost right on social networks? (Vote on our poll)

Before turning five, parents of a minor publish an average of 1,000 photos on Instagram or Facebook.

Before the child even creates a profile of his own or gives his first “Like” on Facebook, his face and most important moments of his life have already been seen by others without his consent.

Parents are the watchers of their children’s stories. If third parties want to share information about their children, they have the right not to allow it. However, parents are becoming helpers of their children’s lack of privacy.

“When parents want to share information about their children, there is no ‘doorman’,” explains Stacey Steinberg, a law expert at the University of Florida, USA.

In networks there is no clear line about where the rights of parents end up sharing the experience of raising their children and the right to privacy that the minors have.

For this reason, Steinberg proposes to create a “public health campaign” on sharenting “for the current lack of a guide available to parents.”

The expert suggests that it is necessary to follow two maxims: the first is “to be clear about the privacy policy of sites where they share content.

Facebook allows you to specify the audience for each photo or post. The second is to “set up notifications like Google Alerts to be notified when your children’s names appear on Internet sites.”

Why do more and more parents do sharenting? “For many, their children are their world. They center their sources of interest and attention on them.”

Children represent them and hence they want to share each of their moments,” says Marisa Russomando, a psychologist specializing in parenting and family.

According to the psychologist, parents often have a “look of tenderness or comedy” in front of photos of their children.

“But there are scenes that maybe their protagonists prefer to keep in the private realm.”
