I had someone ask me about natural herbal pain relief, so I have gathered some videos that give a variety of natural remedies. Herbal pain remedies have far fewer side effects than pharmaceutical medicines, and are non-addictive.

Should the SHTF, medicines probably won’t be available. You can store some in your Prep stores, but they don’t last long. Most herbs last for years, if dried. Start to learn what is available for whichever condition you need help with.

Your local health food stores will have these herbs available, and if you know any herbalists, they can help you out.

How to Build a Raised Wood Chip Organic Gardening Bed for beginners, Cheap Designs

No matter what your soil is like, be it good or bad, you can always raise crops in a raised bed that will give you higher yields and be easier to maintain, once your bed is ready to plant.

Mark, at I Am Organic Gardening, shows us how to make two styles of 2′ high raised beds; 5′ diameter round and 4′ square, using cattle panel fencing, wire mesh, some wire, wood chips and soil or compost.

Part One

Part Two

Mark plants a dozen strawberry plants and some sugar snap peas and white clover in both beds. The goal is to turn the compost into good soil, with aggregates. He adds a thin layer of clay soil from his farm, because clay contains many needed minerals. In the center of the raised beds, he adds several sunflower seeds.

Part Three

Mark adds two tomato plants to the beds and a trellis. Everything looks great!

Part Four

In Part Four, Mark gives us a look at the raised beds just before an expected hail storm with high winds, to show how well they are doing. He also gives us more information on Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi ( AMF ), which most plants need to be healthy.

Part Five

Mark harvests some tomatoes. All of the plants are doing very well. He then opens up a bed for us to see how the root systems have developed.

Stinging Nettle is one of the plants that has been heavily studied in regards to its medicinal and nutritional value. In this video, Adam Haritan shows hows to recognize it, harvest it, eat it or prepare it for medicinal use. It has been shown to be helpful in cases of non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, in treating allergies and in helping with diabetes.

How to Make Compost

Here is a video that explains how to make compost, from AgriLife Starr.

Plants thrive in good soil. Good soil has lots of nutrients, which come from decaying plant matter. Compost also helps retain moisture in your garden and to aerate the soil. Chemical fertilizers only replace a few of the nutrients taken up by plants each year. The soil needs to fed just as much as your plants, if you want healthy plants.

In this second video, Joel Salatin talks compost. Joel Salatin is famous for his unique methods of farming and livestock husbandry. He promotes the building of soil to increase yields.

Growing out New Hampshire chickens

In this video, by Mike Omeg, Mike shows us how he raises New Hampshire Red breed chickens, that are dual purpose, both for eggs and meat. He hatches his own birds, and grows them on pasture.

New Hampshire Red chickens are not as prolific at egg laying as Rhode Island Reds, but grow faster than Rhode Island Reds, which gives a balance between egg-laying and meat production.

Cornish Cross chickens grow faster than both these breeds, but, being a cross, they are infertile, (or mostly so), thus being nearly impossible to hatch them. That is an important consideration when deciding what breed to raise on your farm or homestead. If you are looking to hatch your own chicks, a look at New Hampshire Reds might be worthwhile.

How to Build a Hugelkultur-style Raised Bed Garden

Here is a way to build a no-cost raised bed garden that is made with all natural materials, and that is filled with soil building natural ingredients. The biggest input you will supply is your labor.

The video comes from Maritime Gardening, in Nova Scotia.

This Hugelkultur-style raised bed was created in the fall and will be planted in the Spring. However, you could make one in the Spring and fill it with compost, manure and soil and plant it immediately. Come Fall, you could duplicate what this video shows, where all the rotten logs, hay, or whatever you have available, can be used to build good rich soil full of plant nutrients.

Raising Cornish Cross Chickens For Meat

Kevin, at Living Traditions Homestead, has produced a series of YouTube videos giving a comprehensive lesson for the newcomer in raising chickens. From the arrival of the chicks to their processing, Kevin gives a week by week look at how he cares for the birds.

Kevin uses the basic concept espoused by Joel Salatin, using “chicken tractors” that are moved each day, to house the chickens. The “chicken tractors” are used to protect the birds from predators. Hawks, eagles, owls, raccoons and foxes are just a few of the potential predators. “Chicken tractors” are a compromise between free-ranging your chickens or housing them in a coop. These chickens are not egg layers, but are raised as meat birds.
