Stephen Hawking’s final words to humanity

World-renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking passed away Tuesday, leaving behind a legacy of innovation when it comes to understanding black holes, time and space, and the universe in general.


In recent years, Hawking, who suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder, was outspoken on a variety of issues, often addressing societal, environmental, and existential dilemmas plaguing humanity.


In 2016, he speculated that alien life exists but warned humanity to be cautious about pursuing relations with it, comparing extraterrestrials’ intentions to some of the worst exploitations humanity has inflicted on itself.


On multiple occasions, he echoed the sentiment that when the Native Americans first encountered Christopher Columbus, it “didn’t turn out so well.”



If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans,” he said as far back as 2010, adding that “aliens might simply raid Earth for resources, then move on.”



Hawking was also deeply skeptical of artificial intelligence.



“Success in creating effective AI, could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization. Or the worst. We just don’t know. So we cannot know if we will be infinitely helped by AI, or ignored by it and side-lined, or conceivably destroyed by it,” he said last year.


“Unless we learn how to prepare for, and avoid, the potential risks, AI could be the worst event in the history of our civilization. It brings dangers, like powerful autonomous weapons, or new ways for the few to oppress the many. It could bring great disruption to our economy.”



In 2015, he asserted that “The real risk with AI isn’t malice but competence. A super intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours, we’re in trouble.”


Hawking’s fear of technology in general led him to advocate a controversial solution. He suggested “some form of world government” might be needed to save humanity but also acknowledged “that might become a tyranny.”


He was more firm on other proposed solutions, particularly that humans need to leave Earth and colonize Mars and the moon or face extinction, in part due to the destruction of the environment and the likelihood that an asteroid will eventually hit the planet.


“This is not science fiction it is guaranteed by the laws of physics and probability,” he said last year regarding an impending asteroid. “To stay risks being annihilated.”


He also said:



I am convinced that humans need to leave earth. The Earth is becoming too small for us, our physical resources are being drained at an alarming rate.


We have given our planet the disastrous gift of climate change, rising temperatures, the reducing of polar ice caps, deforestation and decimation of animal species.”



He concluded:



The human race has existed a separate species for about two million years. Civilization became about 10,000 years ago and the rate of development has been steadily increasing, If humanity is to continue for another million years it relies on boldly going where no one has gone before. I hope for the best. I have to. We have no other option.



Hawking also warned of the risks of nuclear war and genetically engineered viruses.


Despite Hawking’s stark warnings, he insisted remained positive. As he said after warning of the risks of A.I.:



All this may sound a bit doom-laden but I am an optimist. I think the human race will rise to meet these challenges.”



Hawking was 76 and lived decades longer than he was expected to after he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Two Weeks Before Death, Stephen Hawking Predicted HOW The UNIVERSE WILL END

 



Two weeks before passing away peacefully, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking predicted the end of the universe. In his final work titled A Smooth Exit From Eternal Inflation, Hawking predicted how our universe would eventually fade to darkness as the stars run out of energy.


Hawking completed a theory outlining his prediction for the end of the universe just two weeks before his death and the work has emerged. According to CNBC, the world-famous physicist, who died last Wednesday at the age of 76, was a co-author of a mathematical paper in which he sought to prove the so-called “multiverse” theory. According to a report by U.K. newspaper The Sunday Times, this theory imagines the existence of many separate universes other than our own.


In his final work, he predicted how our universe would eventually fade to darkness as all the stars run out of energy. Alongside his co-author Professor Thomas Hertog of Belgium’s KU Leuven University, Hawking also proposed a way in which scientists might be able to find alternate universes by using probes on spaceships. This would allow humans to attain a more accurate understanding of our own universe, decipher what else is out there, and ultimately realize our place in the cosmos. “He has often been nominated for the Nobel and should have won it. Now he never can,” Hertog told The Sunday Times in an interview published Sunday.


Hawking, who was perhaps best known for his work on black holes and the theory of relativity, had previously posited the idea that Earth would turn into a giant ball of fire by 2600. Therefore, humans would eventually need to colonize another planet or face extinction, he said.


“Somewhere in the cosmos, perhaps, intelligent life may be watching these lights of ours aware of what they mean,” Hawking said. “Or do our lights wander a lifeless cosmos, unseen beacons announcing that here on our rock, the universe discovered its existence?”


At least Hawking’s theory about the end of the universe sounds like a calm and peaceful way for it to go out.

Two Stars Crashed Into Each Other Flinging Out Gold, And Wobbling The Universe

The amazing new discovery of two crashing stars is a giant leap forward for astrophysics. This celestial event has been described by many as one of the most exciting things to happen in space.


According to The Independent, the super-dense neuron stars crashed together 130 million light-years away, spewing out precious metals and other heavy elements like platinum and uranium. Neutron stars, the collapsed remnants of massive stars that have died in supernova explosions, are some of the most exotic objects in the universe Experts say the event has kickstarted a “new chapter in astrophysics” and confirmed theories about the origin of the mysterious neutron stars. They were also able to use telescopes on satellites and the ground to see the light and radiation that was being flung out of the explosion, which is known as a “kilonova.”


“They [neuron stars] are as close as you can get to a black hole without actually being a black hole,” theoretical astrophysicist Tony Piro, of the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Pasadena, California, said in a different statement. “Just one teaspoon of a neutron star weighs as much as all the people on Earth combined.”


This huge explosion also rocked the very fabric of the universe, distorting spacetime. That is a major discovery in itself, marking only the fifth time that gravitational waves have been spotted on Earth and for the first time ever, scientists have spotted both gravitational waves and light coming from the same cosmic event Scientists didn’t just “hear” the violent blast by seeing the ripples in spacetime. Every other gravitational wave detection has been traced to black holes crashing together in remote regions of the universe more than a billion light-years away.



Albert Einstein first predicted the existence of gravitational waves in his theory of general relativity, which was published in 1916. But it took a century for astronomers to detect them directly. That milestone came in September 2015, when LIGO saw gravitational waves emitted by two merging black holes. Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time generated by the acceleration of massive cosmic objects. These ripples move at the speed of light, but they’re much more penetrating; they don’t get scattered or absorbed the way light does. –Space



On Aug. 17, 2017, LIGO’s two detectors, which are located in Louisiana and Washington state, picked up a signal that lasted about 100 seconds.  That’s far longer than the fraction-of-a-second “chirps” spawned by merging black holes. “It immediately appeared to us the source was likely to be neutron stars, the other coveted source we were hoping to see — and promising the world we would see,” David Shoemaker, a spokesman for the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and a senior research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, said in a statement.


The landmark discovery initiates the field of “multimessenger astrophysics,” which promises to reveal exciting new insights about the cosmos, researchers said. The find also provides the first solid evidence that neutron-star smashups are the source of much of the universe’s gold, platinum, and other heavy elements.

As science — that is, any field shading itself under the considerably broad umbrella of both the physical and theoretical sciences — must remain pliable or be abandoned as an anachronism, our understanding of the Universe constantly fluctuates to accommodate additional information whenever it arises.


For their decidedly dark embellishment in fringe science fiction and storied presence throughout pop culture in mainstays like cartoons, black holes began revealing their deeper secrets only relatively recently — but some findings so departed from the expected, heads are still shaking.

“Physics posits that information — a property of the arrangement of particles — can never be lost, but black holes, which trap and possibly delete information, might throw that current understanding completely out of whack.”



It turns out, black holes might not be devoid of information; nor does a black hole anywise annihilate that data upon its exit. But, with objects appearing variably in 2-D or 3-D or another dimension, entirely, it seems much of our current knowledge pertaining to these astronomical entities will need to be chucked out the window.
