FBI Investigating House Democrat For Paying His Opponent To Drop Out Of Race

Authored by Peter Hasson via The Daily Caller,

The FBI is investigating Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. Bob Brady for conspiracy, false statements and campaign in relation to payments his campaign allegedly made to 2012 primary opponent Jimmie Moore in order to persuade him to drop out of the race, court documents reviewed by The Daily Caller show.

FBI special agent Jonathan R. Szeliga filed a search warrant request on November 1 in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania for all emails associated with Brady’s campaign email, BobCongress@Aol.com

Szeliga asserted he had “probable cause to believe that Kenneth Smukler, Robert Brady, Donald ‘D.A.’ Jones, Jimmie Moore, and Carolyn Cavaness and others known and unknown have committed violations” including charges of conspiracy, false statements, producing false records, causing false campaign contribution reports and violating limits on campaign contributions and expenditures.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Carol Sandra Moore Wells signed the search warrant the same day, court records show. The search warrant was unsealed by the court last week, court documents show.

Seamus Hughes, deputy director of George Washington University’s Program on Extremism, first broke the news on Twitter.

Federal prosecutors announced charges last month against, Kenneth Smukler and Donald Jones, in relation to the campaign finance probe.

Awan Plot Thickens As NY Democrat Yvette Clarke "Quietly" Wrote-Off $120,000 Of Missing Tech Equipment

When we reported last week that Imran Awan and his wife had been indicted by a grand jury on 4 counts, including bank fraud and making false statements related to some home equity loans, we also noted that those charges could simply be placeholders for further developments yet to come.  Now, according to a new report from the Daily Caller, the more interesting component of the FBI"s investigation could be tied to precisely why New York Democrat Representative Yvette Clarke quietly agreed in early 2016 to simply write-off $120,000 in missing electronics tied to the Awans.

A chief of staff for Democratic Rep. Yvette Clarke quietly agreed in early 2016 to sign away a $120,000 missing electronics problem on behalf of two former IT aides now suspected of stealing equipment from Congress, The Daily Caller News Foundation has learned.

Clarke’s chief of staff at the time effectively dismissed the loss and prevented it from coming up in future audits by signing a form removing the missing equipment from a House-wide tracking system after one of the Awan brothers alerted the office the equipment was gone. The Pakistani-born brothers are now at the center of an FBI investigation over their IT work with dozens of Congressional offices.

The $120,000 figure amounts to about a tenth of the office’s annual budget, or enough to hire four legislative assistants to handle the concerns of constituents in her New York district. Yet when one of the brothers alerted the office to the massive loss, the chief of staff signed a form that quietly reconciled the missing equipment in the office budget, the official told TheDCNF. Abid Awan remained employed by the office for months after the loss of the equipment was flagged.

Awan

If true, of course this new information would seem to support previously reported rumors that the Awans orchestrated a long-running fraud scheme in which their office would purchase equipment in a way that avoided tracking by central House-wide administrators and then sell that equipment for a personal gain while simultaneously defrauding taxpayers of $1,000"s of dollars.

Meanwhile, according to the Daily Caller, CDW Government could have been in on the scheme.

They’re suspected of working with an employee of CDW Government Inc. — one of the Hill’s largest technology providers — to alter invoices in order to avoid tracking. The result would be that no one outside the office would notice if the equipment disappeared, and investigators think the goal of the scheme was to remove and sell the equipment outside of Congress.

CDW spokeswoman Kelly Caraher told TheDCNF the company is cooperating with investigators, and has assurance from prosecutors its employees are not targets of the investigation. “CDW and its employees have cooperated fully with investigators and will continue to do so,” Caraher said. “The prosecutors directing this investigation have informed CDW and its coworkers that they are not subjects or targets of the investigation.”

Not surprisingly, Clarke"s office apparently felt no need whatsoever to report the $120,000 worth of missing IT equipment to the authorities...it"s just taxpayer money afterall...

According to the official who talked to TheDCNF, Clarke’s chief of staff did not alert authorities to the huge sum of missing money when it was brought to the attention of the office around February of 2016. A request to sign away that much lost equipment would have been “way outside any realm of normalcy,” the official said, but the office did not bring it to the attention of authorities until months later when House administrators told the office they were reviewing finances connected to the Awans.

The administrators informed the office that September they were independently looking into discrepancies surrounding the Awans, including a review of finances connected to the brothers in all the congressional offices that employed them. The House administrators asked Clarke’s then-chief of staff, Wendy Anderson, whether she had noticed any anomalies, and at that time she alerted them to the $120,000 write-off, the official told TheDCNF.

Of course, the missing $120,000 covers only Clarke’s office. As we"ve noted before, Imran and his relatives worked for more than 40 current House members when they were banned from the House network in February, and have together worked for dozens more in past years so who know just how deep this particular rabbit hole goes.

Also makes you wonder what else Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the Awans might be hiding.  Certainly the decision by Wasserman-Shultz to keep Awan on her taxpayer funded payroll, right up until he was arrested by the FBI while trying to flee the country, is looking increasingly fishy with each passing day.

Rosenstein Resists The Resistance: It Was "Appropriate" For Trump To Fire Comey

While careful to hedge himself, it appears Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has broken the back of The Democrats" desperate narrative by confirming that he stands by his memo that was initially used as the reason for former FBI Director James Comey"s firing.

As The Hill reports, Rosenstein told lawmakers, according to a released copy of his opening statement...

"It is a candid memorandum about the FBI Director"s public statements concerning a high-profile criminal investigation, I wrote it. I believe it. I stand by it."

As a reminder, the memo came under criticism after the White House initially pointed to the document as the justification for Comey"s firing last week. President Trump later said last week he would have fired Comey regardless, although on Thursday he again cited the memo as his main reasoning.

With Senators desperate to leak whatever they could to further their narrative from the "closed-door" meeting, Rosenstein"s testimony crushes one side"s arguments... (via The Hill)

Rosenstein added during the closed-door meetings that the document "is not a statement of reasons to justify a for-cause termination."

"My memorandum is not a finding of official misconduct; the inspector general will render his judgement about the issue in due course," the No. 2 Justice Department official said.

The document criticizes Comey"s handling of the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton"s private email server, but did not directly call for the former FBI director"s firing.

But Rosenstein appears to signal in it that he thought the FBI needed a new director, and notes that he and Sessions discussed the issue during their first meeting.

"Notwithstanding my personal affection for Director Comey, I thought it was appropriate to seek a new leader," he told lawmakers, according to his remarks.

We wonder how long until links between Russian hookers and Mr. Rosenstein is discovered? Or the fact that he watched and dared to enjoy the Sochi Winter Olympics once?

McCabe Crushes 'Trump Interference' Narrative: "There Has Been No Effort To Impede Our Investigation"

As predicted, members of the Senate Intelligence Committee came out swinging early today with several questions for acting FBI Director McCabe on whether the Trump administration was actively seeking to impede an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.  Unfortunately, McCabe"s answers will undoubtedly be somewhat disappointing for Democrats and CNN.

In an early exchange with Senator Marco Rubio, McCabe offered a very succinct answer on alleged White House interference with ongoing FBI investigations:

Rubio:  "Has the dismissal of Mr. Comey in any way impeded, interrupted, stopped, or negatively impacted any of the work, any of the investigations or any ongoing projects at the Federal Bureau of Investigation?"

McCabe:  "There has been no effort to impede our investigation to date."

Moreover, McCabe went on to confirm that no agents have been removed from the Russia probe and that no one from the White House had contacted him about the ongoing investigation.

*MCCABE SAYS HE"D REFRAIN FROM UPDATING WHITE HOUSE ON PROBE

*MCCABE: ALL AGENTS IN RUSSIA PROBE STILL IN THEIR POSITION

*MCCABE SAYS NO ONE IN WHITE HOUSE HAS SPOKEN TO HIM ABOUT PROBE

Asked whether an independent investigator was necessary, McCabe once again had a very succinct answer:  "No, sir."

Senator Lankford:  "Is it your impression at this point that the FBI is unable to complete the investigation in a fair and expeditious way because of the removal of Jim Comey?"

McCabe:  "Is is my opinion and belief that the FBI will continue to pursue this investigation vigorously and completely."

Senator Lankford:  "Do you need someone to take this away from you and somebody else to do it?"

McCabe:  "No, sir."

Meanwhile, going one step further, McCabe also destroyed another New York Times narrative.  Just yesterday we posted about a NYT story which implied that Comey was fired as a direct result of his request for a "significant increase" in funding for his "Russia probe".  That said, McCabe quickly dismantled that narrative by noting that the FBI doesn"t even make funding requests for individual investigations but that the Russia investigation was nevertheless "adequately resourced."

Senator:  "Can you confirm that that request [funding request for Russia probe] was, in fact, made?"

McCabe:  "I can not confirm that request was made.

As you know, when we need resources, we make those requests here.  So, I"m not aware of that request and it"s not consistent with my understanding of how we request additional resources.

That said, we don"t typically request resources for an individual case.  And, as I mentioned, I strongly believe that the Russia investigation is adequately resourced."

Of course, we"re under no illusion that any of this testimony will make one bit of difference in the minds of Chuck Schumer or CNN as the Russians have clearly gotten to McCabe.

James Comey Releases Farewell Letter

Taking the generous way out, former FBI Director James Comey sent a farewell letter on Wednesday to friends and agents, in which he notes he does not bear a grudge and notes that "a President can fire an FBI Director for any reason, or for no reason at all" and adds that "I"m not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed. I hope you won"t either. It is done, and I will be fine, although I will miss you and the mission deeply."

Comey urges the FBI, which he described as "a rock of competence, honesty, and independence" to continue its “mission of protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution”  and concludes by saying that his "hope is that you will continue to live our values and the mission of protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution. Working with you has been one of the great joys of my life. Thank you for that gift."

Full letter below, via CNN:

To all:

I have long believed that a President can fire an FBI Director for any reason, or for no reason at all. I"m not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed. I hope you won"t either. It is done, and I will be fine, although I will miss you and the mission deeply.

I have said to you before that, in times of turbulence, the American people should see the FBI as a rock of competence, honesty, and independence. What makes leaving the FBI hard is the nature and quality of its people, who together make it that rock for America.

It is very hard to leave a group of people who are committed only to doing the right thing. My hope is that you will continue to live our values and the mission of protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution.

If you do that, you too will be sad when you leave, and the American people will be safer.

Working with you has been one of the great joys of my life. Thank you for that gift.

Trey Gowdy (R-SC) After FBI Director Comey Briefing: "Be Very Very Careful" Relying On NYT and Washington Post For Leaked News

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) appeared on Fox"s First 100 Days Thursday evening after a closed door briefing earlier in the day by FBI director James Comey concerning the agency"s investigation into claims of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The interview begins with host Martha MacCallum mentioning that Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA), who attended the same meeting, was "rattled" over the lack of information Comey gave concerning Russian involvement in the election.

Gowdy, on the other hand, seemed shocked at Schiff"s apparent lack of enlightenment:

Jim Comey did more today to update us than I have ever had done in the 6 years I have been there, and for Adam to treat it that way - that dismissively, clearly he and I were in two separate rooms this morning.

I have never heard a Federal law enforcement agent give, with that degree of particularity and detail, an update on an inquiry. As you may recall, I was a federal prosecutor for 6 years, so I have talked to lots of FBI agents. He went so far beyond what any other administration official has ever done, whether it"s Eric Holder, Loretta Lynch, or his predecessor Robert Muller - they never gave us this level of detail and specificity. He bent over backwards.

When pressed on whether or not FBI Director Comey revealed any new information in light of [former CIA Director] John Brennan and [former Director of National Intelligence] James Clapper finding no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians, Gowdy deflected - citing the confidential nature of the briefing. He did, however, make a statement concerning the New York Times ($NYT) and Washington Post - publications included in what President Trump and top advisor Steve Bannon refer to as the media "opposition party":

I will tell you this - to the extent people are relying on media reports, whether it"s the New York Times or the Washington Post, upon which to base their factual assertions, I would tell them to be very very careful. I"m not gonna say any more than that, other than to say that the person leading the investigation on behalf of the Untied States government, the head of the FBI, listen to what he has to say - don"t listen to anonymous sources who leak classified information which, oh by the way, is also against the law.

Between Jim Comey and a reporter from the New York Times, give me Jim Comey.

Takeaways: Rep. Gowdy clearly heard a lot of things he liked during the closed door session, while deflated Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff did not. Second; FBI director Comey obviously discussed the dissemination of leaked classified information to the mainstream media - to the extent that Gowdy, an attorney and former prosecutor, is advising people who rely on the leaks to be "very, very careful" in doing so.
