A massive vegetable recall has been issued for a huge array of packaged vegetables. Mann Packing in Salinas, California has issued a huge recall that affects not only their own brand but also Nourish, Wal-Mart, HEB, Archer Farms, Western Family, Trader Joe’s, and more. The products could be contaminated with listeria and have a “best if used by” dates from October 11 to October 20.

According to the FDA, Whole Foods Market is recalling Veggie Power Blend, Sesame Chicken Power Salad, and Mexican Chicken Power Salad that were sold by the pound on salad bars between September 28, 2017 and October 20, 2017.

The FDA reports that Triple B Corp is recalling salad kits and stir-fry mixes were distributed in the states of Oregon and Washington through retail store delis, hospitals, schools and hotels.

All of these recalls are related to the possibility of listeria from Mann Packing. Gina Nucci, Director of Corporate Marketing, released the following statement:

On the afternoon of October 17 we were informed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) that their random sampling program found a single positive result for Listeria monocytogenes on one of our products. Out of an abundance of caution, Mann Packing decided to recall certain vegetable products.

We understand these recalls are concerning for consumers, but I want you to know that this action was taken because your health and safety is our highest priority. As a mom, I work hard every day to ensure that our products are safe for our kids and our families, which is why we made the choice to take this very cautious approach and recall our products.

I want to share some information about this recall which may be helpful to you and your family.

 Public health authorities have reported no illnesses associated with the recalled products.

 The majority of the product has expired with “best if used by” dates from October 11 to October 20. These “use by” dates can be found on the front of all Mann Packing products.

 The recalled products were distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada. A complete list of recalled products can be found on our press release.

 Consumers who have purchased any recalled products are urged not to consume them, to discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

 We have set up a 1-800 number where you can learn more details about the recall. That number is 888-470-2681.

 While there have been no reported illnesses, if you have consumed the product and have any concerns, we urge you to contact your medical provider.

Mann Packing will continue to work closely and cooperatively with CFIA and the Federal Food and Drug Administration to ensure a complete and effective recall of any and all impacted product. According to the FDA, Whole Foods Market is recalling Veggie Power Blend, Sesame Chicken Power Salad, and Mexican Chicken Power Salad that were sold by the pound on salad bars between September 28, 2017 and October 20, 2017.

The FDA reports that Triple B Corp is recalling salad kits and stir-fry mixes were distributed in the states of Oregon and Washington through retail store delis, hospitals, schools and hotels.

All of these recalls are related to the possibility of listeria from Mann Packing. Gina Nucci, Director of Corporate Marketing, released the following statement:

On the afternoon of October 17 we were informed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) that their random sampling program found a single positive result for Listeria monocytogenes on one of our products. Out of an abundance of caution, Mann Packing decided to recall certain vegetable products.

We understand these recalls are concerning for consumers, but I want you to know that this action was taken because your health and safety is our highest priority. As a mom, I work hard every day to ensure that our products are safe for our kids and our families, which is why we made the choice to take this very cautious approach and recall our products.

I want to share some information about this recall which may be helpful to you and your family.

 Public health authorities have reported no illnesses associated with the recalled products.

 The majority of the product has expired with “best if used by” dates from October 11 to October 20. These “use by” dates can be found on the front of all Mann Packing products.

 The recalled products were distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada. A complete list of recalled products can be found on our press release.

 Consumers who have purchased any recalled products are urged not to consume them, to discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

 We have set up a 1-800 number where you can learn more details about the recall. That number is 888-470-2681.

 While there have been no reported illnesses, if you have consumed the product and have any concerns, we urge you to contact your medical provider.

Mann Packing will continue to work closely and cooperatively with CFIA and the Federal Food and Drug Administration to ensure a complete and effective recall of any and all impacted product. Are Grocery Chains About To Join The Retail-Bankruptcy Bloodbath?

Amazon officially assumed control of Whole Foods Market on Monday and by noon, channel checks at WFM stores revealed that its new tech overlords had already slashed prices by nearly 50%, sending bonds of its grocery-chain rivals reeling as grocers confronted a new dilemma: either slash prices to the point of unprofitability, or hold the line and risk seeing sales evaporate.

And as bonds of even highly rated grocery chains have underperformed this week, Bloomberg is questioning whether the WFM acquisition has fundamentally changed market dynamics in what was previously an island of stability in a retail sector beset by bankruptcies.

Even before the WFM acquisition, the industry experienced the first signs of strain as Amazon launched its Amazon Fresh grocery service and Wal-Mart started stocking up on reasonably priced organics – factors that contributed to the massive drop in WFM’s market cap, allowing Amazon to scoop it up for less than $14 billion.

Prior to this, the conventional wisdom dictated that grocers were impervious to the onslaught of e-commerce that was decimating industries such as clothing and electronics. Investors reasoned that consumers would probably balk at buying perishable goods like food online.

But Amazon, with its seemingly infinite capacity to slash prices and brook losses, has created new risks for Whole Foods" rivals.

Apollo Global thought buying North Carolina-based Fresh Market for the “every day low price” of $1.4 billion would be a turnaround slam dunk after its success with Sprouts Farmers Markets. One year later, the future profitability of that deal is in doubt, and that uncertainty is being reflected in the price.

“The bonds that financed Apollo Global Management’s purchase last year of upscale grocer Fresh Market plunged to new lows this week. The cost of buying contracts to protect against a default in Albertsons Cos.’s debt has jumped. Bonds of Bi-Lo Holdings have lost almost half their value this year.”

When Apollo Global bought Greensboro, North Carolina-based Fresh Market for $1.4 billion last year, the grocery world seemed quite different. The chain, known for its fresh produce, had seen sales slow. To lure customers back to Fresh Market’s roughly 170 stores, the private-equity titan was betting it could rely on its experience with previous - and profitable - investments in companies such as organic grocer Sprouts Farmers Markets.

But Fresh Market is struggling for some of the same reasons that sent Whole Foods into the arms of Amazon. Mainstream competitors including Kroger Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. have pushed deeper into sales of fresh produce and organic products. Supermarkets have opened so many stores that many analysts expect a shakeout. Before the Amazon deal, Fresh Market bonds traded as high as 91 cents on the dollar. Now they fetch less than 76 cents.”

The reason is simple: Amazon, which is insulated not only by its e-commerce hegemony but also by investors who don’t expect the company to turn a profit. One analyst aptly referred to this as the Amazon-Whole Foods "fear factor.”

“It’s the fear factor of Amazon,” said Mickey Chadha, an analyst at Moody’s Investors Service. “No retailer can under-price as long as Amazon can, make no money and get away with it. That’s why people are scared.”

News of the Amazon deal obliterated billions of dollars of grocers’ valuations, slicing $2 billion off Kroger’s market cap in one day. The grocer’s stock is down 35% this year. Yet its bonds have held steady.

Meanwhile, nearly $3 billion in Albertsons bonds due in 2021 have tumbled..

“Kroger’s bonds, which are investment grade, haven’t been hit. But about $3 billion of Albertsons debt coming due in 2021 has felt a chill. The loans have been trading at 97.6 cents on the dollar. Large, liquid, secured loans of that size typically command par, or 100 cents. A public stock offering for the Cerberus Capital Management-backed grocer was again put on hold after Amazon announced its purchase of Whole Foods.”

...causing the cost of insuring them to skyrocket.

As one might expect, analysts now believe that large chains with relatively low debt burdens will somehow manage to survive.

But smaller chains like Bi-Lo Holdings may soon find that their debt burdens are untenable:

“For example, Bi-Lo Holdings has borrowed hundreds of millions to make cash payouts to private-equity owner Lone Star Global Acquisitions. One of the bonds the company sold to pay the dividends now trades at levels indicating investors expect to recoup only a third of what they loaned the company.”

Tops Friendly Markets, another troubled grocer, is being choked by its $720 million debt pile.

“Tops Friendly Markets, which is reporting millions in losses, is straining under $720 million in debt. Using a maneuver typical of distressed companies, it put off repayments due in 2018 while it grapples with price deflation and traditional rivals in its western New York home turf. If earnings and the balance sheet don’t improve, investors holding the rest of Tops’ bonds could find they’re stuck with spoiled goods.”

However, there"s at least one factor that may insulate the market"s weaker hands, at least for a little while. There are 40,000 grocery stores in the US, only 400 of which are WFMs...

So, should investors be bracing for a wave of grocery bankruptcies resembling this year’s record run of failures among department stores, apparel sellers and electronics retailers? Maybe not right away. But once Amazon"s had a few years to expand its footprint, a massive shakeout seems inevitable.
 

The Germans Are Coming... And Their Groceries Will Cost Up To 50% Less Than Wal-Mart

Back in February we reported that as America"s deflationary wave spread through the grocery store supply chain, the scramble for America"s bottom dollar was on, and it prompted America"s largest low-cost retailer Wal-Mart to not only cut prices, but to squeeze suppliers in a stealthy war for market share and maximizing profits, a scramble for market share which is oddly reminiscent of the OPEC 2014 price fiasco and is certain to unleash a deflationary shock across wide portions of the US economy.

As Reuters reported at the time, Wal-Mart had been running a "price-comparison" test in at least 1,200 U.S. stores and squeezing packaged goods suppliers in a bid to close a pricing gap with German-based discount grocery chain Aldi and domestic rivals like Kroger. Citing vendor sources, Reuters said that Wal-Mart launched the price test across 11 Midwest and Southeastern states such as Iowa, Illinois and Florida, focusing on price competition in the grocery business that accounts for 56% of the company"s revenue.

Notably, while Wal-Mart was considering cutting prices to match its competition, the near-monopoly retailer was also seeking offseting cost cuts from its own vendors, in what could lead to a deflationary shock that would ripple across the entire US grocery store supply-chain, with dropping prices leading to margin collapse inside the entire industry, and eventually a default domino effect. 

And, as we also reported, as part of the relentless competition among the largest grocers Wal-Mart would have no choice but to proceed with even more aggressive price cuts in the future. The reason for this is that Germany-based discount grocer Aldi had emerged as one of the relatively new rivals quickly gaining market share in the hotly competitive US grocery sector, which already boasts Kroger, Albertsons Cos Inc and Publix Super Markets as stiff competitors on price.

A second Germany-based discount grocer, Lidl, was planning to enter the U.S. market this year, which together with German Aldi would pose a serious threat to Wal-Mart"s U.S. grocery business.

Now, thanks to a follow up by Reuters, we can safely assume that the upcoming grocer price war is about to turn nuclear because the abovementioned German discount grocery chain Lidl, which is opening its first U.S. stores this summer and is eager to capture US market share at all costs, said its products would be up to 50% cheaper than competitors... which are already caught up in a margin-crushing price war.

"This is the right time for us to enter the United States," Brendan Proctor, chief executive officer for Lidl U.S., told Reuters at a media event in New York late on Tuesday. "We are confident in our model. We adapt quickly, so it"s not about whether a market works for us but really about what we will do to make it work."

And as first order of business, what Lidl will do is generate huge losses by massively undercutting prices in hopes of capturing market share from established names like Walmart, Kroger and Albertsons. Think Uber but for grocery stores. 

There is already a case study of what happenes next, should the two German invaders prove successful. Lidl, which runs 10,000 stores in 27 countries, and German rival Aldi Inc have already upended Britain"s grocery retail market, hurting incumbents like Tesco Plc and Wal-Mart Stores Inc"s ASDA supermarket chain.

Looking ahead, Lidl said it would open its first 20 U.S. stores in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, starting on June 15. Eighty more will follow in the United States within the first year, which Procter said would create 5,000 jobs. Analysts cited by Reuters estimate the company will have more than 330 U.S. stores by 2020.

The stores will be 20,000 square feet in size and have only six aisles. The retailer"s in-house brands will account for 90 percent of the products.

And while the latest German invasion may lead to dramatic changes within the hierarchy of established US grocers, one thing is certain: the US consumer is about to be the biggest winner yet again, as prices for (subsidized) groceries are about to plunge across the nation.
