Two NYPD detectives are facing first-degree rape charges for arresting a teenage girl and then raping her while she was handcuffed in the back of their van.
Community policing, in its most basic form, argues that there is a right way to interact with community members, and there is a wrong way. And when it comes to BBQ cookouts, it may be best to partake, rather than attempt to shut one down, as it violates the city’s code for outdoor grilling.
One NYC police officer reportedly told a group of residents barbecuing on the sidewalk that they had to move. And when they chose not to turn off their grills to adhere to NYC regulations, he took matters into his own hands.

In New York City, the code is pretty simple. One cannot have a fire or grill within 10 feet of a flammable surface. Many residents take to the sidewalk to show off their culinary skills, grill their food, and share the experience with their loved ones. The code reads, according to one source:
“You may be asking yourself ‘where can I grill?’ On the sidewalk? Think again. Grilling on the sidewalk is not permitted by the Fire Code and is a sidewalk obstruction. There’s always the park! The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation allows grilling in designated areas. Arrive early to secure a pit on summer weekends or bring your own grill. If you have more than 20 people, you will want to apply for a Special Event Permit.”
So when the unnamed officer decided to handle business his way, he angered all of the community members who were arguably simply trying to enjoy their cookout.
The officer grabbed a gallon of water and poured it over the food and the grill, putting out the charcoal fire. Immediate was the reaction the officer got from the public, with many trying to shun him for ruining the children’s food.

Accompanied by his female partner, who looked visibly shaken with the climate of angry street chefs, tried to get the officer to leave. At about that time, a water bottle—which appeared to be empty—was thrown at the officer, hitting him in the back.
Could the officer have not engaged the street BBQ cooks? Should he have insulted the residents by ruining their food? Was there a better way to handle the situation? These questions and more remain unanswered, as many are left scratching their heads in disbelief following the officer’s actions.
If we remove the fact that the officer has a badge, we pretend he does not have the full weight of the law behind him, and we assume he has the guts to do what he did in plain clothes, he could have gotten a much more violent response. All of which makes the video and the encounter with the public appear to be yet another example of badge abuse and privilege.
The officer knew he was trying to escalate the encounter so he could call backup and arrest a bunch of people who were simply not trying to burn their houses down. Think about it. It’ s much safer to cook on the sidewalk, in civil disobedience to the oppressive law, than it is to grill on one’s front porch where an accident can likely occur.

White Plains, NY – Critics are saying police have reached a new behavioral low with the way they dealt with a 72-year-old man who is now suing the White Plains Police Department for unnecessary and excessive force, and has the injuries to prove it.
Charles Pateman was trying to intervene in a domestic dispute between his fiance’ and her daughter. The residential surveillance camera shows the elderly man attempting to get into the elevator to go up to his apartment when police grabbed the well-known businessman and developer, slamming him into the wall and then the floor. After several moments of rough handling, they then placed him in handcuffs.
The officers involved demanded Pateman “stand up or we’ll drag you out,” a command which arguably could be difficult for a person over the age of 70 to comply with.
After he got to his feet, and was taken to the squad car, Mr. Pateman asked the arresting officer to loosen his handcuffs. The reasonable request was answered rather sarcastically as the officer replied, “they’re not built for comfort, sir.”

Even though Pateman politely asked repeatedly for the officers to loosen his cuffs, they refused. The mild-mannered businessman was reportedly respectful throughout the arrest but even asking nicely wasn’t enough to get the officers to release the compression on the cuffs.
As a result, the elderly man’s wrists began to bleed, saturating his clothes with blood, his lawyer said recounting the arrest. Randolph McLaughlin Esq. of Newman Ferrara LLP is representing Pateman in a federal civil rights lawsuit against the police department and the city. He addressed reporters saying:
“The officers viciously and brutally slammed him against the wall and then handcuffed him in such a tight fashion that when you see the video, you’ll see pools of blood dripping around his hands. His clothes were filled with blood.”
McLaughlin criticized the officers’ handling of his client. “They were cavalier. They were brutal and they were indifferent to this man’s medical needs,” he charged.

“Twelve times throughout the incident, I asked them to loosen the cuffs,” Pateman said. “I could feel the blood running down my hands. It was unbelievable to me.”
Pateman also said he had to wait several hours before receiving medical attention, and he defended his actions on that fateful night. He said:
“I’m 72, two officers with guns? I’m a threat to them? Please! You know…just unbelievable…I’m a very respectful man, have been my entire life…I’ve been a supporter of police my entire life and never had any problems whatsoever…Born and raised in Westchester County.”
Pateman said he fears that if he doesn’t speak up and speak out the police will continue hurting the elderly. “If this could happen to me it could happen to anyone and obviously the White Plains police are not trained appropriately or this would not happen,” he said.
The well-known real estate developer described how traumatic his rough handling and injuries have been to his emotional state of mind. “This has been a very traumatic event in my life, something I could not believe could happen,” he said.
As The Free Thought Project has reported, interactions with the elderly must be taken very seriously. Senior citizens are even more susceptible to suffering from both fractures and broken bones—injuries that could greatly impact their quality of life.
A California woman suffered a broken hip when a police officer ignored her demands for a search warrant before forcibly entering her home and knocking the woman to the floor. The injury led to her physical demise. Even though she won a nearly million-dollar lawsuit—paid for by taxpayers—she died before she was ever able to spend a dime.

Predictably, the White Plains leadership, instead of issuing an apology, vowed to vehemently defend the charges of police brutality. Karen Pasquale, Senior Advisor to the White Plains Mayor, issued the following statement:
“In matters of litigation it is our policy to not comment while litigation is pending. We have not yet received the papers in the lawsuit, but we are aware of the case and intend to vigorously defend it in court.”
An apology could possibly avoid litigation and a costly settlement with the city that will potentially cost taxpayers millions. But that will probably never happen, leaving many scratching their heads in disbelief as it remains to be seen whether the officers who arrested Charles Pateman will be held accountable for their actions.
New York, NY — Former NYPD sergeant Michael Iscenko is facing charges of third-degree sex abuse, after he was accused of flinging his semen at a female co-worker. Not only has the victim come forward to testify against Iscenko, but there is also video and DNA evidence against him, proving that he is guilty of the crime.
The footage that has surfaced since the event shows the former officer sneaking up behind an office worker in the NYPD building, and launching some type of liquid substance onto her leg before running out of the office.
On the stand, the victim told the jury that, “I turned back because I felt someone behind me and when I turned back, Michael, he was behind me.”
“I saw Mike behind me and told him, ‘Ewww! Why did you do that?’ in disgust, and he just looked at me and walked to his office,” she said.
The victim also reported that Iscenko had sexually harassed her on multiple other occasions.

Assistant District Attorney Emily Ching said in court that the victim reported ongoing sexual advances and comments from Iscenko throughout their work relationship.
Ching told jurors that the officer “demonstrated that he was gratifying his own sexual desire” when he forced his bodily fluids onto her.
The harassment was corroborated by another NYPD employee who told NY Daily News that he “was apparently so enamored by her that he threw semen on her.”
According to the woman’s attorneys, the substance was tested in a lab, which showed that it did, in fact, belong to Iscenko. However, Iscenko’s attorney has contested the results of the tests, and is insisting that the substance was in fact saliva, and not semen. The defense has argued that the tests only prove that some type of substance came from Iscenko, but not what type of bodily fluid it actually was.

“You will hear the experts disagree about whether the material was semen or saliva,” defense attorney Michael Horn argued.
“Something landed on [the victim’s] leg. To put it in New York terms, was it schmutz or was it semen?” he said.
Defense attorney Ching argued that “there is no other substance this can be other than seminal fluid.”
Horn was also extremely aggressive in his cross-examination of the victim, accusing her of fabricating the charges against the officer so she could gain a financial settlement.
Matthew Weinick, another lawyer for the defense also went on the attack, blaming the victim and making accusations of ulterior motives.
“The allegations are just so outrageous and extreme and the department deviated so much from typical police procedures that it didn’t appear they were operating in good faith and there was an ulterior motive,” Weinick said.
After Iscenko was fired, he sued the police department for discrimination, claiming that he was fired because he was white, not because of his sexual assault charges. However, the lawsuit was quickly dismissed by Manhattan Federal Judge Lorna Schofield, who said that Iscenko’s claims did not “plausibly” suggest discrimination.
The police decided to quiet the story down by paying the victim a $147,250 settlement.
Iscenko is hoping that a new DNA test of the substance will exonerate him, but even if the tests do show that the substance was semen, he is only facing a maximum of three months in jail.
If this is the way that some officers will treat their co-workers, it is scary to imagine the lack of respect that they will have for people that they encounter on the street.
