Only 1 TBSP Of Coconut Oil Produces Powerful Health Changes, Study Confirms | coconut-oil1 | Natural Medicine Special Interests


A simple tablespoon daily of coconut oil could promote weight loss and improve cardiovascular health, reveals a new clinical study. 


A new study titled, “A coconut extra virgin oil-rich diet increases HDL cholesterol and decreases waist circumference and body mass in coronary artery disease patients,” holds great promise in those suffering from overweight, obesity, and heightened cardiovascular disease risk, and against which pharmaceutical approaches often fail.


Coconut oil was once considered a “bad fat,” as it contains saturated fatty acids which conventional nutritionists did not distinguish from synthetically produced ones such as margarine. We know far better now, and increasingly, natural sources of saturated fats are gaining appreciation as not only “not-bad,” but actually beneficial, particularly for the brain. The new study evaluated the health effects of a nutritional treatment with extra virgin coconut oil, focusing primarily on how it affects HDL cholesterol and a range of anthropmetric measurements (e.g. body weight, size, circumference).


The average age of the participants was 62.4 ± 7.7 years, with 70% of elderly individuals, and 63.2% of males. All of them were hypertensive and 94.5% had blood lipid profiles indicating “dyslipidemia” and on standard, cholesterol lowering drug treatment.


In the first phase, a three month period, 136 enrollees were put on a standardized diet. From the third month onward, the 116 who completed the first phase were place in two intervention groups: 22 remained on the diet, and 92 were put on the diet + 13 ml (.43 ounces) daily of extra virgin coconut oil, which is equivalent to about 14 grams, or about 1 Tablespoon (15 grams).


The results of the the three-month coconut oil intervention showed that relative to the standard diet, the coconut group saw a decrease in all six of the bodily parameters measured, including:




  • Weight: -.6 kilograms (1.322 pounds)




  • Body Mass Index: – .2 kg/m2




  • Waist Circumference: -2.1 cm




  • Neck Perimeter: -4 cm




  • Systolic Blood Pressure: -3.3 points




  • Diastolic Blood Pressure:  -3.5 points




Additionally, the coconut oil intervention group saw a 3.1±7.4 mg/dL increase in HDL cholesterol.


The researchers concluded:



“Nonpharmacological interventions are essential for risk factor control in secondary prevention among patients with coronary disease. Our study showed that a diet rich in extra virgin coconut oil seems to favor the reduction of WC and the increase of HDL-C concentrations, aiding with secondary prevention for CAD patients.”



Discussion


This study is far more powerful than may first meet the eye. For instance, at present, pharmaceutical interventions to raise HDL cholesterol lack solid scientific support. Only yesterday, I reported on a new JAMA review which revealed an astounding number of medical procedures have no benefit, even harm, wherein it was concluded that ,”In patients with low HDL-C levels who are treated with statins, there is no clinical benefit to HDL-C–targeted therapies.” Considering the fact that pharmaceutical interventions to lower HDL cholesterol have a wide range of serious side effects, the new finding that coconut oil may provide a natural alternative with side benefits, is all the more encouraging.


Additionally, midsection fat, also known as abdominal obesity, is a serious risk factor for cardiovascular events and cardiac mortality. In fact, a 2007 study published in the journal Circulation found that of three risk factors evaluated for heart attack, namely, abdominal obesity, abnormal lipids, and smoking, abdominal obesity was the most powerful: 48.5%, versus 40.8% for abnormal lipids, and 38.4% for smoking.


When one considers these two factors, any safe, diet-based lifestyle modification that can safely raise HDL-C cholesterol, and reduce midsection fat and related anthropometric parameters such as BMI and midsection circumference, is a home run.


This is, of course, not the first time we have reported on the powerful health benefits of coconut oil. In fact, it doesn’t take months, or even days, to observe positive changes in certain populations. Fresh Concerns Emerge over Energy Drinks’ Damage to the Heart

Energy drinks have been linked to heart problems in a new study published April 26 in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAMA).


Oh, but it’s not the first time, not by a long shot. A 2013 study showed that energy drinks put an additional strain on the heart, causing it to contract more rapidly than usual. Over time, this can weaken the heart and cause palpitations.


A November 2015 study revealed that consuming just 1 energy drink per day puts you at risk of heart attack and stroke because they cause harmful spikes in the ‘fight or flight’ hormone noradrenaline, as well as blood pressure.




In March 2016, researchers warned that the sugary, uber-caffeinated beverages increase the risk of having an abnormal heart rhythm and can increase blood pressure, making the products especially dangerous for people who have preexisting heart conditions.


It’s not just the caffeine that can cause the heart to go haywire, though. The vitamins, stimulants, and herbs in the drinks, combined with caffeine, super-charge your ticker in ways it can’t handle.


Emily A. Fletcher, Pharm.D., study author and deputy pharmacy flight commander at David Grant U.S.A.F. Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in California, says:


“For the 1 in 3 Americans who already have hypertension, this increase in blood pressure from consuming energy drinks could pose a potentially serious risk.” [2]


Regular Caffeine vs. Energy Drinks


Little is known about the safety of some of the other ingredients in energy drinks, so researchers decided to find out what kind of effect these components have on the heart.

For the most recent study reported on in this piece, researchers compared physical changes in a group of 18 healthy men and women after they drank a commercially-available energy drink, and after they consumed another mixture containing the same amount of caffeine, but none of the other ingredients.


The energy drinks used in the study contained 320 mg of caffeine (the amount found in 4 cups of coffee), 4 oz of sugar, several B vitamins, and a “proprietary” blend of taurine and other ingredients commonly found in drinks like Monster Energy, Red Bull, and 5-Hour Energy.


Sachin A. Shah of David Grant Medical Center on Travis Air Force Base and University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, and colleagues measured the volunteers’ blood pressure and used an electrocardiogram (ECG, or sometimes called an EKG) to measure heart electrical activity for 24 hours after participants consumed the drinks.


No odd heart activity was reported after the regular caffeine beverage was consumed, but it was a vastly different story after participants consumed the energy drink. An ECG change called QTc prolongation that is sometimes associated with life-threatening irregularities in the heartbeat was observed. [1]


The authors point out that several drugs have been pulled from the market just for causing ECG changes of a similar magnitude.


After consuming the energy drink, participants saw a nearly 5-point increase in blood pressure, compared with a 1-point increase after consuming the caffeine drink. The energy drink also caused the participants’ blood pressure to remain elevated for 6 hours.

If you’re a healthy person, those changes aren’t cause for concern. But if you have heart problems, you should steer clear of energy drinks.


Dr. Jennifer L. Harris from University of Connecticut’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity in Storrs, who wasn’t involved in the study, says:


“The energy drink industry claims that their products are safe because they have no more caffeine than a premium coffee house coffee.


However, energy drinks also contain a proprietary ‘energy blend,’ which typically consists of stimulants and other additives. Some of these ingredients (including taurine and guarana) have not been FDA-approved as safe in the food supply, and few studies have tested the effects of caffeine consumption together with these ‘novelty’ ingredients.


On top of that, energy drinks are highly marketed to adolescent boys in ways that encourage risky behavior, including rapid and excessive consumption. As a result, emergency room visits by young people in connection with energy drinks are rising.”


Between 2010-2013, the U.S. poison control center received more than 5,000 reports of people who got sick from energy drinks.  Nearly half of those cases were in children who didn’t realize what they were drinking.


The American Academy of Pediatrics says energy drinks have “no place” in the diet of children and adolescents.

Security Experts: St. Jude Heart Devices can be Hacked

Imagine having a device implanted in your heart to help it keep beating, only to be told there’s a chance someone with nefarious intentions could hack into it. That is exactly what experts are warning could happen to cardiac implants made by device maker St. Jude Medical Inc.


The frightening claim comes from the short-selling firm Muddy Waters, which said in a legal brief filed October 21 that experts from the boutique security firm Bishop Fox have validated its claims. [1]


Vulnerabilities


The concern centers around the [email protected] transmitter, which according to St. Jude, “allows efficient remote care management of patients with implanted cardiac devices through scheduled transmissions and daily alert monitoring.” [2]

The claims were made back in August by Muddy Waters founder Carson Block, who cited presentations by security experts that showed hackers could convert the [email protected] devices into “weapons” that could cause cardiac implants to stop delivering shocks to patients’ hearts. [3]


St. Jude’s chief technology officer Phil Ebeling said at the time that the claims were “absolutely untrue,” and that the device maker had “several layers of security measures in place” and conducts regular security assessments.


The medical device maker responded to Muddy Waters’ claims by filing a lawsuit against Muddy Waters on September 7. [1]


However, the 53-page Bishop Fox report released by Muddy Waters last Friday shows that St. Jude implantable cardiac devices are more vulnerable to hacking than the company either realizes or wants to admit.



According to Bishop Fox, this could be done in a number of ways. In 1 possible scenario, a hacker could remotely turn off the therapeutic functions of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), then send a T-wave shock to a patient’s heart, causing ventricular fibrillation, which could lead to cardiac arrest.

Bishop Fox claims in its report that it tested the attacks from 10 feet (3 meters) away, but it is possible for someone to attack up to 45 feet away using an antenna, or 100 feet away using a transmitting device called a software defined radio.


The report was submitted in federal court in Minnesota as evidence by Muddy Waters in its legal defense.


Short sellers make bets that stock prices will fall selling borrowed shares so they can buy them at a lower price and profit from the difference. St. Jude alleges that Muddy Waters intentionally disseminated the information about the devices to manipulate its stock price, which fell 5% the day they went public with their claim.


Bishop Fox said it shored up Muddy Waters’ claim with help from well-known specialists in cryptography, computer hardware hacking, forensics, and wireless communications.


Risky Business


Medical-device hacking, or “medjacking,” sounds like a scary sci-fi move plot, but it’s so realistic and serious that the FBI warned about its potential in September 2015.

The bureau warned:


“Criminals can use these opportunities to remotely facilitate attacks on other systems, send malicious and spam e-mails, steal personal information, or interfere with physical safety.”


Former Vice President Dick Cheney was so concerned about his heart defibrillator being hacked that he had the wireless connection disconnected several years ago.


The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urges hospital network administrators and medical device makers to take these steps to prevent possible “medjackings”:


  • Limiting authorized access to medical devices that connect to the hospital network

  • Protecting individual elements of the device from exploitation

  • Designing the device to function in fail-safe modes

  • Creating retention and recovery modes for the device

  • Monitoring the hospital network for use

  • Evaluating network components

  • Installing security patches to networks if necessary
