Fucking FDA did a tremendously stupid thing during the last administration. For old drugs (fucking 100 years old, some of them), so old there were no "modern" safety studies, the FDA allowed any company who performed this safety testing to have drug exclusivity.
So, companies starting picking off drugs that used to cost pennies per dose, ran the safety study (which fucking of course showed the drugs to be safe) and then proceeded to jack the fucking price up hundreds and thousands of percent.
I had a drug I used to get 100 tablets for $8 that now costs me $180 for 30 tablets. This is the same fucking reason epi pens cost $300 each. Merck used to sell these for $7 each and made a bundle doing so. Mylan ran the studies and VOILA!. The pens cost to produce is roughly $3. There are many, many other examples. And exclusivity means these companies are the only ones "allowed" to make the drug by the FDA for a period of a year or more.
The fucking system is broken.
