In any severe economic depression/collapse, or during any period of societal upheaval, store-bought medicines will quickly disappear. There are alternatives, however, for many of the store-bought medicines. Nature provides us with an abundance of medicinal plants and herbs. If you know them and know their uses, your family will be healthier, and you can provide a service to your friends and neighbors.
Store-bought medicines are derived, in most instances, from natural sources. Why not go straight to the source?
There are many books available concerning both edible and medicinal herbs. I will list a few for you. These books both identify the plant and give its uses.
I live in the mountains of Montana, so I have a copy of:

Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Rockies by Linda Kershaw.
I find it to be an excellent resource for plants I can find in my area.
Another good book for those in the West is:

Foraging the Rocky Mountains: Finding, Identifying, And Preparing Edible Wild Foods In The Rockies by Liz Brown Morgan
If you live in Eastern or Central North America, there is:

Peterson Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs of Eastern and Central North America, for medicinal plants and herbs.
For edible plants in the East and Central US, there is:

A Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants: Eastern and Central North America
All of these books are available at Amazon, through Barnes and Noble, or could be ordered through your local bookstore.
