Once upon a time owning a clock was a status symbol. Only the very wealthy and powerful could afford one. Ordinary people had to rely on the church- or town-clock. Privately owned clocks were only found in the finest places and were displayed in prominent positions for all to admire. The expensive clock on the mantelshelf is no longer distinguishing. New artifacts have replaced them as status symbols.
