By disrupting the fine balance of appetite and metabolic hormones, artificial sweeteners distort the body"s ability to monitor how many calories we consume. About 25 percent of children and more than 41 percent of adults in the United States reported consuming foods and beverages containing artificial sweeteners (AS) such as aspartame, sucralose, and saccharin in a recent nationwide nutritional survey, according to a study out today. Those numbers represent a 200 percent increase in AS consumption for children and a 54 percent jump for adults from 1999 to 2012.
