How to Build a Raised Wood Chip Organic Gardening Bed for beginners, Cheap Designs

No matter what your soil is like, be it good or bad, you can always raise crops in a raised bed that will give you higher yields and be easier to maintain, once your bed is ready to plant.

Mark, at I Am Organic Gardening, shows us how to make two styles of 2′ high raised beds; 5′ diameter round and 4′ square, using cattle panel fencing, wire mesh, some wire, wood chips and soil or compost.

Part One

Part Two

Mark plants a dozen strawberry plants and some sugar snap peas and white clover in both beds. The goal is to turn the compost into good soil, with aggregates. He adds a thin layer of clay soil from his farm, because clay contains many needed minerals. In the center of the raised beds, he adds several sunflower seeds.

Part Three

Mark adds two tomato plants to the beds and a trellis. Everything looks great!

Part Four

In Part Four, Mark gives us a look at the raised beds just before an expected hail storm with high winds, to show how well they are doing. He also gives us more information on Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi ( AMF ), which most plants need to be healthy.

Part Five

Mark harvests some tomatoes. All of the plants are doing very well. He then opens up a bed for us to see how the root systems have developed.
