Thanksgiving – 2017

Today is Thanksgiving, a day to pause to give thanks for our blessings. It is a time to gather together with our families and friends to share in a good meal, and some good conversation.

No matter what your life is like, you can find something to be thankful for, if you are honest. Yes, the world is as messed up as it has ever been, but what else is new? Really. Was last year any better? Or the years before? Family and friends make this crazy life worth living, so appreciate them while you have them. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. The turkey that is golden brown, sitting on the table with mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and vegetables of many varieties, bring smiles to everyone’s face, as we sit down to enjoy the feast that was prepared with love.

We are on our best behavior on Thanksgiving. Even the children aren’t fighting. At least it is true in my house. Why can’t it be true every day?

At the first Thanksgiving, in Plymouth Plantation, the local Native Americans brought food to the hungry Pilgrims, in a gesture of friendship. I have a suggestion for you. Instead of going on a frenzy of shopping on Black Friday, why not take a box of canned goods to the local food pantry or soup kitchen, to help those less fortunate than you? Or take some old clothes that you don’t wear any more to the local Goodwill, or Salvation Army store? By giving to those less fortunate than yourself, you are giving thanks in a meaningful way.

Thanksgiving, like Christmas, has always been a time of kindness, in my life. May you share a kindness with others on these days, and throughout the year. In spite of our troubles, most of us have many reasons to be thankful. Just pause to realize how true it is.
